Show photos instead of albums in the main page

Hello,
I was wondering if there is a way to display photos in the main gallery page instead of the albums, even if the photos are uploaded inside the albums.

Move the photos from the album to the root album.

but isn't there a way to set the root album to show the latest photos or top rated photos from other albums instead of showing the albums themselves?

There is modules for that to show those in the sidebar.
