getting started

well, some organisation recommended me to download gallery 3.0.9 to get started with my scientific website on moths and butterflies. Well, I downloaded it but all it is are some basic information and data. How can a download that small work to create webpages?! How do I get started with it? Or do you need to pay for it before you get the real download? Why so complicated and not straight forward? Any suggestions or assistance would be more than appreciated. Thanks guys!
