I have a recurring problem from version to version that never seems to fix itself where after I create an album and upload the photos, some of the thumbnails are not thumbnails. They are the original large image and it takes up the entire screen and makes everything look awful. To fix it, I either have to delete it and upload it again or sometimes if I rotate the image and rotate it back, that will fix it. Speaking of rotating images, that seems to take FOREVER and sometimes it won't rotate it. I'll get an error. This has been a recurring problem, too.
I just upgraded to Gallery 3.0.9 and like I said, it's been a recurring problem that is frustrating because it should only take as long as it takes to upload an album to be done but I usually have to spend an extra 15 minutes plus fixing the album because of all the thumbnail problems.

It is a resource issue on the server. to very this try adding smaller images.

Mmmk, assuming that IS the issue, how would I work around it aside from adding smaller images because I want the original high quality large images available?

The host.... if it is a resource issue. The software has no control over resources.
If you are using GD as the image toolkit ( Admin -> graphics ), then try another. If you can't choose another, that is a host issue again.

If you're bumping into resource issues (and you can't work around them on your own), the usual solution is to either get a new host or a new package with your current host.
Also, not sure how you're addressing the large thumbs, but I assume that you're using the rebuild_items module to rebuild the oversized thumbs.
