Hello,
Some very strange things have been happening lately.
A week or two ago, after a large upload (~2000 proofs), a customer of mine emailed to say she was viewing her proofs, then went back later and one of them was missing. Sure enough, one of her series of shots is gone. The strange thing is when I searched her name, the missing proof appeared in the search results. It just wouldn't show up as part of the album. Without wanting to waste a lot of time on it, I simply reloaded her proof and carried on.

Yesterday, after another large upload, I was told that an ENTIRE ALBUM has disappeared! Again, if I search for one of the riders whose proofs are in that album, it appears in the search results. If I click on the thumbnail it takes me to the full size proof (photo page). However, if I click on the breadcrumb to the disappearing album, I get an error that the page cannot be found.

So the items are still there, but not accessible.
I've deleted the db cache (all the caches in fact), optimized and repaired, but still doesn't show up.

I have since reloaded the proof album, so now if I search a name in the album, I get duplicate search results.

The album in question is:
http://www.photosbybailini.com/g2/v/Equine/2013/equus3dfallht_sep29/pe/o/sj/

If you want to try searching a name, you can use Kaila Orr. The results with proof numbers 290913-Vxxx are the ones of interest.

Thank you in advance for any insight you can offer.
Andrew

Thanks for your reply, suprsidr.
One of the first things I checked were the permissions on the parent album and set them to apply to all sub-albums. They're all set for public viewing.
It was accessible after the upload so I know it was a public album. Just disappeared after a while.
Never seen anything like this before.

Also, I was logged in as admin when I was looking into it.
Could an album be hidden or kept from viewing by the admin?

Admin can see everything.
From looking in your DB if you could determine the albumId you could use an edit link and see if the permissions have been corrupted.

I used GR to obtain the missing album id. 409847 Yes, it still shows up in GR as an album.
Could you please explain how to use an edit link..? Never heard that term before...
Thanks!

For more info, I clicked on a thumbnail from the search results that exists in the missing album and copied the debug tree.
Not sure if it means anything or not, but....

Thanks suprsidr.
I tried while logged in as admin and still came up with the "page cannot be found" error.
Not sure what that means...

I know I'm a complete noob, but I know enough to replace the XXXX with the id number and to make it point to my server.... LoL!
Tried your link anyway and it took me to the log in page. After logging in as admin, I still got the "page cannot be found" error.... sad.

so on the parent album try resetting permissions recursively.
if the parent album is huge and you don't want to reset all those other albums:

  • create a new album note its id
  • edit the db g2_childEntity for 409847 and change the parentId to the new album's id
  • edit the new parent album's permissions recursively

you could also find your item in the g2_item table and check the ownerId (admin should be 6, but you can check g2_user for your id)

Lastly make sure your gallery's files and resources are still good
FAQ: How can I make sure that my installation files are all intact?

Thanks again, suprsidr!
I'll have another large upload on Tuesday, so will take a look at those points before then.

Checked the db for the missing album. I am the owner (6).
Created a "test" album and set it as the parent id. Changed permissions recursively. Still get the same "page cannot be found" error.

So, did the integrity check. The missing files were all associated with the "fluid" theme which I'm not using, so no worries there.
The modified files however are a little more worrisome (I think.....)

modules/checkout/templates/Select.tpl
modules/rewrite/data/mod_rewrite/custom/.htaccess
modules/rewrite/data/mod_rewrite_no_options/custom/.htaccess
modules/slideshowapplet/applets/GalleryRemoteAppletMini.jar
modules/core/classes/GalleryPhotoItem.class
modules/uploadapplet/applets/GalleryRemoteAppletMini.jar

I know I altered the checkout template, but not sure what the others mean.
At this point I'd like to just delete the missing album since I've reloaded those proofs anyway. I'm more concerned with preventing this from happening again.
Thoughts...?

You should remove the slideshowapplet altogether. it has not had an update in ~8yrs
you may have needed to update the rewrite files when you activated. you may want to download new versions and compare.

GalleryPhotoItem.class absolutely should not be altered, download a fresh copy and compare to see what is different. and I'd suggest replacing the altered.

Thanks suprsidr.
Deleted both slideshow applet and slideshow (just to be safe). Wasn't using them anyway.
I know my gallery2 is outdated so where can I find a fresh download of this version of GalleryPhotoItem.class?

Downloaded the G2.3.2 full package.
the GalleryPhotoItem.class looked the same so I uploaded it.
Ran the integrity check and got....
modules/checkout/templates/Select.tpl
modules/rewrite/data/mod_rewrite/custom/.htaccess
modules/rewrite/data/mod_rewrite_no_options/custom/.htaccess
modules/uploadapplet/applets/GalleryRemoteAppletMini.jar

Not sure what was modified, but it seems clean now. Yes?

However, I still can't delete that confounded album. Grrr...

After all this, now my gallery remote won't launch.
I get the protocol implementation error.

I know you don't like GR, but I really need it to work asap!
Can you glean anything from the previous posts that would cause GR to stop working? Was fine before.
I launch it from a .jar file on my computer. Downloaded it from the codex.
I've tried from the "add item" pane but that doesn't even try to launch! The mini applet in the "add item" results in the same protocol imp. error.

I've enabled java log and trace, but don't know where to find those files....??

Here's a thought.
When I ran the installer to check for missing/modified files, I had to re-authenticate (first step, I believe). Could this be blocking GR from recognizing this computer now?

do you have the latest remote module for G2?

I have not used GR or the upload applet since I wrote the uploadify module.

Deleted the plugin and downloaded from the repository in Gallery.
For the one on my computer, I downloaded it from the codex so all should be up to date (or as much as an outdated app can be...).
Working on installing uploadify now.... fingers crossed.

Can uploadify create new albums or do I have to create the albums first, then uploadify the proofs to them?

uploadify is an uploader only. and it works in a tab like the upload applet did.

That's why I really need my GR to work again. Very time consuming to create the albums individually... I make a lot of albums!
So, the Java Webstart from the GR tab sort of worked. It "installed" and opened, but then came up with the same "GR can not find any protocol implementation at the URL..."
Does that shed any new light on the problem?
It's something associated with the steps I performed to fix the "missing item" problem because it worked before.

did you mess w/ your rewrite?

Also the zip upload module allows you to upload a zip w/ directories->subdirectories->items and it will respect the entire directory structure of yoour zip, creating the necessary albums, sub-albums etc.

I don't think so. I uploaded a clean version of the GalleryPhotoItem.class since it was shown as "modified".
I ran the installer again and once again failed the authentication so had to upload the new login.txt file to /g2. Could GR be looking for the original login string? If so, how do I update that with the new string?

Unfortunately, the uploadify app isn't working so well for me.
Uploaded most of my proofs (to the first of many albums), but not all. The ones that did upload were not in order.
So, revisiting the GR issues.
I tried again with the upload applet tab (miniGR). Still the same error, but at least I got this log. This is the bottom of the output (what I think pertains to the error):

So, I got the proofs uploaded using uploadify. Once I figured out how to change the sorting of the albums, it was pretty slick.
Just one pet peeve, though.... When a file fails to upload (HTTP error) is there a way to keep it in the queue or to display the file names of the errors? I had a hell of a time going through the album (some of them were 5 pages) to find which files didn't load. Other than that, it was a pretty slick app! Thanks!

That being said, I'd still prefer to get my GR working again. Hoping that you can give me some direction on that...

gallery forwards all request to remote to a specific address via .htaccess(if I remember correctly)
.htacess:
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} gallery\_remote2\.php

make sure that line is in your g2's .htaccess

Thanks suprsidr.
Already in there....
The directory, however, is g2\...remote\ not remote2. I don't know if that matters.

Also, theres this at the top of g2's .htaccess:
.htaccess
ASCII text
#<Files ~ "\.(inc|class)$">
# Deny from all
#</Files>

the rest of the file is rewriterules and conditions, so this looks out of place...

I tried putting that rewrite cond in the .htaccess for the public_html directory (one step up from g2) and still got the same "no protocol implementation" error when I launched GR.
What about the HTTP Auth module? Could that be causing this problem? Is it safe to disable/delete the module?

I saw some things pertaining to GR in there. Not sure if it means anything...

Huh?

I would re-setup rewrite through gallery's admin interface. Something with your rewrite has runamuck.

I believe the rewrite was set up by the developer who changed my Gallery to display the full size proofs as flash objects. More secure than jpgs. Can't remember his name, though....
Would that be something that I could hire you to look into for me?

LoL! Ah-HA! I know the feeling....
I'd still be willing to pay you for your time if you'd like to look into that.

I've attached the java console output when I tried to run the upload applet (miniGR) if that's of any use.

Would uninstalling (NOT deleting!) and re-installing the rewrite module help or just lead to more problems?

rename your current .htaccess to .htaccess_old -> deactivate/uninstall(not delete) G2's rewrite module -> re-activate/re-install -> re-setup rewrite through site admin > rewrite

Thanks suprsidr! Step by step is just what I need!
I'm fine with all of it except the last two. I guess printing the screen of the rewrite setup before uninstalling would suffice in getting it back to how it should be..?
Also, do I have to initiate the rewrite or does it do that automagically when it's enabled?
