I've just finished installing the basic Gallery3, no upgrades, modules or themes so far. At this time I (admin) am the only registered user.

But in testing the gallery on different browsers, I found that Gallery3 is using cookies. Can you tell me why they are needed? What they accomplish? Is disabling cookies a possibility?

We don't use any cookies on our website, and this would be a break with our general policy. If they are required for the functioning of the gallery, I just need to write a policy page that explains them to our members.

Disable them to find out.
In general they are used for session info to authenticate the user.

Could you explain in more detail please? Absolute novice here.
How would I disable the cookies? And has anyone ever disabled
cookies, to be able to discuss what the consequences (if any)
might be? Are cookies only required for registered users?

First it depends on the browsers on how to disable cookies. Google is the best answer for that. Disabling on G3 would be a different story. I'm not interested in digging in to find out how. Why not disable on the client, see what happens and then put up your page with the info you find.

As Dave said in an earlier post, the cookies are required for authentication and identity during usage of the site to maintain the session. Disabling them would prevent any user actions that require a user to be authenticated, such as uploading, etc.

Thank you both for your explanations. They give me enough understanding of their function to be able to discuss them accurately in our privacy policy.
