Comments - Disable for certain photos/albums?

Is it possible to disable the comments module on certain photos / albums?

I have considered adding an additional column in the 'items' folder which if set to a certain value prevents the comment button, form and existing comments from being shown. However, unfortunately sometime spent trying to code this has returned no success.

Just wondering if anyone else has managed this or possibly knows a way around it?
