I am new to this software, but not new to programming or computers. Yes, I have been through all the documentation as much as I could. I am well aware of RTFM. The install was done via Network Solutions maybe 5 days ago. Since I have unix hosting there it was offered along with [coff] coppermine as gallery solutions. I picked Gallery3 in part due to already developed themes. It was Gallery3 version 3.07 that was originally installed. Gallery3 was just updated to 3.09. to eliminate any possibility that the issue was due to using an older version.
I will make a long story short. I wanted to change themes. I uploaded a few. When I go my my themes directory, I see these themes: gallery wind, admin_wind, clean_canvas, default_carbonized, greydragon, steel, and pear4gallery3 and fotox.
When I go to the admin theme choice page, default_carbonized and greydragon do not show up.
It has not been a great experience so far as there were other issues. It didn't help that the two themes that didn't show up in the them choice page were my first two choices for themes.
Any ideas?

Look at the file system of the 2 themes that you don't see and I bet there is another directory under them as well. Compare to the wind theme for example of how it should look like.
For example it will have a module.info file in the themes directly not another directory with the same name.

Download and unpack package into Gallery’s themes folder. Please make sure the "theme name” folder is not duplicated.

That was one of the first things I checked. I knew about the extra directory bit and avoided it. Sorry, I should have said that in my original message. I spent yesterday dealing with a burned out wireless router to a wireless card that refused to talk to the new wireless modem to a wireless printer that wasn't happy about the new router either. And, as it turns out, an FTP program that was quirking behind my back. (I now use FileZilla) I was a tad distracted when writing the post and dealing with everything that was going on.
Of course, now that I have solved things, I feel stupid
Now that the router thing is behind me, except for locking it down, I have had a calmer fresh look at things.
For the default_carbonized theme, the theme.info and thumbnail.png did not get uploaded. I have no idea why. I fixed that, and it now shows up as a choice.
Greydragon was a different problem. Part of rechecking involved download a new copy ... the just in case thing ... which proved fortuitous. The zip file had a different name. This time it was greydragon-theme.zip. A quick check of the plain greydragon.zip revealed that the contained folder had a datestamp of sometime in 2011 ... meaning it was for an older version of Gallery. No idea how I managed to download an older version. New version download, uploaded, and old version overwritten, and yes, it shows a choice now.
Time to relax and play since I have the bulk of my art uploaded now and all those other problems solved. Mind you, if you have techniques for dealing with a cranky 11 year old girl, I'll happily take them.
Thanks for taking the time to stop and help.

All I can say is it gets worse then slightly better when they turn 15. I'm in the same battle.

You made me smile. It is so nice to be able to put an human face as it were to tech support in what can be a dispassionate digital world. Currently the 11 year old is not cranky, and is sitting next to me playing on her iPod which she used her own money to buy. She's cranky at times, but she really is a good kid.
