My gallery installation is on InMotion Hosting, where Gallery3 is now part of the Softaculous package. I have tried twice, unsuccessfully, to upgrade to 3.0.8 using the Softaculous automated upgrader routine. Both times the pictures and albums were all jumbled on top of each other, though with the dark_canvas theme which I had installed. Worse, log-in didn't work so I couldn't go to maintenance. I restored my backup.

I looked up Upgrading in the Gallery 3 user guide and it says to create a new gallery installation, copy the themes, modules and var files to the new installation folder, then go into the current gallery/upgrader and follow the instructions there. Clearly the Softaculous upgrader routine didn't do that. It appeared to just copy files on top of the old files.

I'm beginning to think the Softaculous automated upgrader doesn't work.

Am I understanding correctly that the only way to upgrade to 3.0.8 is to create a new directory with a clean database, then follow the instructions in the user guide?

Like most one click installers it does not work.

No, the upgrade direction mention nothing of a new DB.

I would suspect that you did not upgrade the theme files or this one click installer/upgrader did not either.

Thanks Floridave! I'll just follow the instructions from the user guide then and install 3.0.8 in a new directory and then user the installer function. (I see now that the installer uses the same database - sorry I misspoke.)

I'll tell InMotion Hosting tech support that their upgrader doesn't work.

I looked into installing 3.0.8 into a new directory, but decided to try one last time to fix the formatting problems caused by the Softaculous upgrade. I copied all of my dark canvas themes files that had been updated by the Softaculous upgrade to the correct places as well as files that had been overwritten by the upgrade from the var directory. It still didn't work correctly, although this time I was able to log in. But I couldn't fix the problems by logging in, and even in maintenance mode, the "correct other problems" routine never reached 100%. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't just around the corner from a solution, but I wasn't, so I restored my backup again.

I was about to try doing it the long way, by creating a new directory and clean installation and then moving files over, when I saw that there is already a new Gallery version 3.0.9. In Motion Hosting doesn't have the new 3.0.9 yet, so I decided to wait on the upgrade until 3.0.9 is available - unless 3.1 is just around the corner, in which case I'll wait a little longer.

Unfortunately even for a clean upgrade, I'm stuck with the Softaculous installer, which appears to automatically set up a new database.

When do you think 3.1 will be available? Maybe I'll wait if it will be available soon.

I love your product. The only way those of us on shared hosting can get your product is through the Softaculous package included in our web hosting plan. We need to get Softaculous to address the installation issues - at least by giving step by step instructions on how to work around the problems and limitations of the installer process.

I will be glad to help with testing the upgrades, and the Softaculous installers (since those of us on shared hosting are stuck with them).

The direction dont say that. It says a new directory but nothing about a new install.

We don't know and we never give out dates for future versions. There is only a couple of devs working on it at the moment and life gets in the way as well.
There is a lot of changes in 3.1 and thus there will be some some time before it is ready for testing.

Like I said, I have never seen any one-click installers work properly and suspect that they don't even test some of them. Best is to learn how to upgrade the manual method.
