Managed to make a mess of things. Getting the "Dang" message when adding "upgrader" to url.
It happened last evening, then I mistakenly installed a new copy with new database and have since redirected the url to the original database using database.php in var. After trying the upgrader the photos disappeared from var. I copied var with photos to the file again but the database.php was now empty. I now seem very far away from a simple upgrade. I used a backup and copied the database.php into the "new", 3.0.8, var database and lo and behold it works,
