I was looking for information on backing up and restoring G3 but didn't see it in the FAQ or other documentation. I did find this thread - http://galleryproject.org/node/98086 My purpose with this thread is just to throw my vote in for a module such as this. I will avoid using PhpMyAdmin, ughhh. I even work with SQL databases quite often and I don't want to deal with that for my hobby site. I guess we at least could use some improved instructions. I imagine most people just don't have a backup. My concern is that I am using Gallery 3 along with Wordpress and I basically upload photos to albums in Gallery 3 and then use that as hosting for using the same photos within Wordpress posts. That way I have a good structured way to upload and view photos in Gallery, but I can also use those same photos in Wordpress which is the important part of the site and they aren't duplicated. Also Wordpress isn't a very good way to upload and use lots of photos. It solves several problems. I think this could be a great usage model for Gallery3 also that could be promoted. I am using the EmbedLinks module in Gallery3 to get the URLs needed for posting in Wordpress. If there is ever some kind of failure, even if I had my Wordpress backed up, all the images in my Wordpress posts would be broken obviously. I could re-upload them to a new G3 installation but I would have to re-edit every URL in my Wordpress posts for using the images as they would have changed (and I'd have to guess which is which). Here is a Field of Dreams wish something like this - Thanks for listening! |

The general idea is nice, however, what about the photos? A lot of gallery installations out there have 100's if not 1000's of photos. (I have around 35k myself = ~120gigs)
Backing up of the database is a simple task. But doing this as a 'module' may not be. However, I'm sure there are a number of ways to accomplish this successfully, perhaps even as a module, esp. with maintenance mode turned on.
Restoring would be a challenge from within a running Gallery I think.
* just some random thoughts *
Right now, I use a shell script to dump the database, zip up the gallery structure (excluding thumbs/resizes/albums) and drop off to a network share.
I backup my photos via other backup methods

I dont really see the problem backing up G3 manually. Connect via Ftp and Download everything, afterwards export the database in MySql admin. Depending on the amount of photos you have a restored running G3 within minutes.

I tend to agree, it's really as simple as that. I do understand that not everyone is as technically inclined to do so, but I'd venture to guess, that a manual backup / restore, is just as simple as installing in the first place.

I guess I will go with that method. MySQL Admin is no longer supported but I do have a copy. It's nice and simple. That sure beats PhpMyAdmin! Backing up with MySQL Workbench (at least recently) was buggy and didn't work for a long time.
I guess I was just looking for something easier. Chances are I won't backup very often this way.
