Is there any way to insert an external link in a photo or it's description?

Use the http://codex.galleryproject.org/Gallery3:Modules:purifier module and you can add html link to the description.
Or if your photo wants to be a link: http://codex.galleryproject.org/Gallery3:Modules:item_links
