Captcha with gallery 2.3.2?

Since I've been getting some bot's hitting my gallery site of late, I decided to give captcha a try. After going through an update from 2.3.1 to 2.3.2, and failed attempts to get Gallery 3.0.6 to actually work for me (that might be another post) I've gotten captcha to sort of work on my site. I'm really only concerned with blocking bots from registering, since I have the gallery set to require my authorization for all new users. But, I have NO image displayed above the captcha input line for new users. All the modules say they're installed for captcha to work too.

Is there an actual fix for the captcha plugin for Gallery 2.3.2 or is it a dead item?

Lets start by thinning the herd of toolkits a bit.

  • Dcraw - do you need RAW image support? if not uninstall
  • Exif - are you using this to display photo info or auto rotating images? if not uninstall
  • Getid3 - has absolutely no purpose definitely uninstall
  • LinkItem - do you allow links to external images/site? if not uninstall
  • SquareThumb - this has some known compatibilities w/ GD are you using this? if not uninstall
  • Netpbm - you only need one graphics toolkit, if ImageMagick works on your server then pick one and uninstall the others (IM is better)

I left Exif enabled since I do have the data being displayed. I located the recaptcha plugin, downloaded, installed, and got that running now. I'm really just looking for a way to stop the bots from trying to create accounts on my gallery site. I am building a new VM, with CentOS 5.9, to try Gallery 3.0.6 again. I just hope it won't fail so horribly this time. It was FoF on CentOS 6.4 the other day.

Gallery 2 has been working better for me. I didn't want to be forced to go to the new version over this. So, with the recaptcha plugin installed, activated, and working, I'll see how things go. I'm still planning on testing Gallery 3.x to see when it's 100% working in my environment. I do hope that the recaptcha plugin is something that continues to be worked on, to resolve any bugs it has (it's in beta after all).

I need to look into doing some other maintenance items now...

So you used reCaptcha instead? I am working on the same issue, but only want a captcha to appear on the signup form. Is this configurable with reCaptcha?

Got it working. It's only in effect for the sign-up I believe (tested it earlier, but not since then). I would do a backup of your site/server and then give it a shot. Worst case, you have to roll-back to the restore point. Oh, and that was beyond easy for me since I'm running the site on a VM (VMware vSphere).
