Protect groups with password

First of all I would like to thank you for the really slick photo gallery the team is providing. After 5 years I decided to relaunch Gallery for my website and I must say that it has really developed a beauty here. Q: What I can't figure out is how I can protect a group with a password. Should I look for a plugin or how can I do such in an easy way (and through the administrator's interface)? Thanks for your response, |

I added a user to a group. To prevent the photo albums being seen by people, I want to protect the photo albums from that user for access by putting a password to the group in which this user belongs. The user itself is protected by a username and group, but I don't want the visitors to open the users'account to see the photo albums.
I hope I explained myself clearly; perhaps there is another way to do such?

I'm still not sure what you mean: "The user itself is protected by a username and group"??
Either way, you should be able to add the user to a group an make the album(s) viewable only by that group. Not what you're looking for?

Sorry if I explain myself wrongly. This is what I understand:
I create a user X and put this user in a group XX.
This user X creates photo albums which automatically belong to the group XX the user is in.
As the photos contain images that are only to be seen if you have a password, you can do either two things to view them:
1. Make the photo albums in group XX view only for the creator, user X (for which you created the user X account and put view security of files for only that user
2. Put a password on the group XX to which user X belongs. The BIG advantage is that you don't have to provide the user X account password to see the photo albums that are in group X.
We only need an extra field in the group setup in which you can put a password in.
Ofcourse I can solve the issue by putting a .htaccess in the applicable folder that contains the images, but I think this request is very useful to solve within the Gallery administration.
Btw: this functionallity is also used to protect forums with.

I'm still not following 100%. But here is what I did.
1. Created an album called GroupPermissions.
2. Added 2 items (movies) to it.
3. Created a group called 'Group1'.
4. Added a user called 'fred'
5. Added the 'fred' user to the 'Group1' group.
6. Set permissions on that album so that only the 'Group1' group can view the album and full sized views.
Example:
http://www.langleycom.com/gallery3/
login as fred / fredfred
you will now see a album called:
http://www.langleycom.com/gallery3/index.php/GroupPermissions
in that album you will (as the fred user in the Group1 group be able to see the items.
If that is now what you are after and only want the user to enter a password and not have to login with a user and password then there is a different module for that:

That is what I meant - must have had a temporary blackout as I haven't checked such a module thru this forum.
Using a user and adding it to a group is ok but then you actually are in user mode (with its security) rather than being anonymous and just accessing on password validation.
