I don't know the ins and outs of the slideshow, but my first thought is that it's a resource/timeout issue.
(Actually, my first thought is that a 20MB image is WAY too big for a website, no matter how large the monitor you're using--I mean, what camera did that come out of anyway?--but I digress.)
The best way is to re-adjust the size of the photo. There are many tools that can actually resize photos that can maintain the pixels you want them to be such as photoshop or photoscape.

There is a setting from the docs: http://codex.galleryproject.org/Gallery3:Modules:slideshow#Notes that will allow the re-sized version to be used.
