sizing and display plus thumbnails

As I understand it, gallery takes the uploaded image file and creates a thumbnail and then when requested to display the larger screen size, loads the original image.. Correct ????

When done this way, large size images take forever to load, I want large size (originals) so my users (family) can download the original if they want a print.

What I want is a perfect world, I want gallery 3 to look at the original, make a thumbnail and a screen sized copy and also keep the original. When loading a slideshow, etc the screen sized copies are displayed, but the download icon points to the original.

gallery already makes thumbs, resizes, and the original available for view.
you can remove the view full size from anonymous users so only registered or any group you want can see the full
