autorotate modules does nothing

Module / Theme name & version: autorotate

installed autorotate module and activated - no rotation of exif-oriented jpgs while upload - no error - no log - do i miss something? How to check?

after uploading rotated images there are rotated images in var/tmp/rotateXXXX with wrong exif-data (still have orientation rotated) and smaller size. the images in albums/resizes/thumbs are the original uploaded and not rotated.

Please help.
