Add photo error message: "could not open the URL"

The following information is required to get an answer: I built a very large gallery using version 1.5.2-pl2, and first I want to thank you for such a wonderful product. I intend to donate some money to you tonight. My immediate problem is that I uploaded some photos to my website, and put them in the same directory where I usually put them. When I went into the sub-directory where I wanted to add them and clicked Add photos, I got the error message "could not open the URL." I checked the URL using my browser and the pdf images work just fine. I tried adding photos that were in directories I had already added to the gallery previously, and got the same error message. Is there some limit on the number of images, or space limit that I may have hit? I have plenty of space left on my Verio account. I would like to upgrade to Gallery 3, but can't figure out how to do that with the instructions I found in your forum. When I go to my website using FTP Commander I can't see any directory for the gallery. I installed Gallery 1 from Verio's built in library of applications. (Verio also offers Gallery 2, but not Gallery 3.) I would like to upgrade to the latest version of Gallery 3, but I'm confused as to how to do that. When I installed Gallery 1, it was already on the Verio server (in a place I cannot access). When I go into the guts of my website using the control panel, I can see the gallery config file, but none of the other files (thumbnails, application, etc.) that make up my photo gallery are listed, even when I click "show hidden files." I called Verio's tech support and was told that the gallery is a third party application that does not really reside on my website. I am not sure he knows what he was talking about, because the images in the gallery have the URL of my website (though in the root directory, not the www directory). He also told me that to upgrade to Gallery 3 I would download Gallery 3 to my computer hard drive and when I install it, the program would ask me for the host server IP address and would automatically install it there. Is that correct? Right now my first priority is getting Gallery 1 accepting new images again, if possible. But I would like to upgrade, because I have a lot more images I will be adding the future. P.S. I wrote Verio's customer support and asked them if they would add Gallery 3 to their library of add ons. That might solve the problem. In the meantime if you know what I might try to do to fix the problem with Gallery 1.5, I would really appreciate some guidance.
I did manage to find the config files and the place where Gallery put the thumbnails and medium sized images. But the database.php application appears to reside on a part of the server outside the area I can access. A friend told me to try using phpMyAdmin. I did, but it did not find any databases.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
