A few questions about changes I want to do!

Hello all!

First of all, thank you for a great gallery-software!

I'm working at an Architect-firm in Sweden/Stockholm.
At the moment I'm looking at using Gallery3 as our Image database with reference-projects, inspiration-photos, employee portraits and so on.
It's looking great so far but there are a few changes that I will need to do.
It would be very kind of you if I could get some kind of pointers of how and if its possible to do those changes.

I have a lot of experience with Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, HTML and just a little bit of PHP (I can't code from the start, but got knowledge enough to modify PHP-code as soon as it not gets to complex)
I've searched for modules adding this features I'm looking for without success.

1. I would like to add more Album and Photo Information, like Name of the Photographer, Yes/No if the image can be used outside the company (copyright issues and so on).

I guess that I could find the PHP file used for upload/Create Photo/Album and modify that, I might even manage to get that info published in the Photo-information module, is this the correct way of doing it?

2. When I upload a Photo I'm always uploading high resolutions, though for our homepage, and other presentation materials, we are using 3-4 certain resolutions.

Is it possible to have those different resolutions generated automatically, and create a module for the right sidebar with links to each resolution?

3. All our templates for presentation materials are InDesign documents.

Is there ANY way to place images inside InDesign directly from gallery3? Any ideas how that could be made?
What I don't want is duplicates of the images on our employees hard drives if possible.

I will probably hire some programmer do do this fixes for me, that would probably save me a lot of time...
But is it doable?

I'm using Gallery 3.0.2 !

Best Regards Patrik Rosén

You mention gallery2 twice, but posted to a gallery3 forum.
Answers to these questions differ from G2 to G3, so please edit this post and either move to a G2 forum or clarify G3 in your questions.

Sounds like the custom fields module would work: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery3:Modules:custom_fields

Not with G3. In G2 there is multi resizes that can be generated with links on the side.

The software is for "your photos on your website" ... not sure what 'InDesign documents' are. G2 allowed for more file types to be uploaded and thus a bunch of complex code in the background. How do you get thumbnails of these documents?
Other file types can be added to G3 with the videos module.

Dave

Thanks Dave!

I dont know how I could have missed that module, it does EXACTLY what I want!

Will G3 get this feature in the future you think?

Indesign is a layout software from Adobe, I don't want to upload the Indesign Documents, but would like to attach photos in the InDesign documents, from the Gallery3 page, I guess that's a question for Adobe Indesign though, to place images from web URL's...

It will be up to the community to develop a multi resize module. I don't see the core team doing so.

Ok!

How much different is the Gallery3 core from the Gallery2 core?
Is it a tough job to take the old one and convert it to Gallery3?

Weeks or days work? (for an experienced programmer)

Totally different.
But, to be sure, download and peek around.

Hello Again all!

I'm bumping this questions-thread with a few more questions!
After some testing I've now got an OK to use Gallery3 as the software for our imagebank/gallery. We also looked at Openasset and other similar softwares! So thats nice!

I have to implement a few features though (if they're not available in some where already)

1. Today I can set the thumbnail res, and medium res, along with the fullsize image.
Would it be possible to add more sizes here?

2. When a user has selected favorites (I've added this module) I would like to add a feature that lets the user chose what resolution to download the photos in (as the Zip-file)

3. We would like to connect our gallery3 to our Active Directory, so that the users in the office can use the same user accounts.

4. I would like each users to actually save the "favorites" as on the account, so they for example can create their own favorite albums.

Ok, there are a few of my wishes, what I would like from you is just some ideas if its possible or impossible, I'll probably hire a programmer to create this features since my PHP knowledge is limited.

Best Regards P

Yes, it's all possible. Yes, it would require significantly customizing the Gallery files. If you hire a programmer, they could likely get it done.
You may want to fish around the market forum: http://gallery.menalto.com/forum/65
