Random block killed my site

Whoa that was scary. Had gallery running perfectly embedded into my postnuke site, Only installed it yesterday so it's all using the latest version of gallery and such.

I wanted to try out the random image block today and wham, kills my site completely. Couldn't even get into admin, just had the message on all my pages that I was using an old version of the configuartion wizard and needed to run it again together with links to go and do that which revealed to all my visitors tonnes of details in the configuartion (which is all filled in) stuff i dont want them to see.

I really didn't expect this. The only way to get my site back (running through the config again as suggested didnt help at all) was to rename the gallery folder in modules so it couldnt be found, this generated an error on my site but at least i could then get back into admin and disable the block.

I'm petrified of even trying gallery again right now. I guess it shows you should never edit a live site, but i never imagined for a minute that just adding a block would do something as disastrous as that.

Not sure what to do now about the random block, that was really the whole point in installing the gallery so I could cycle random images on the front page of my site. Bit bummed out now I must say. lol

Anyone any idea why I'd get an error page that i had run an out of date config? when I only just installed gallery yesterday, not sure how i can get any more of a recent version/config than a few hours ago fresh from the official site.

The version of the block I tried is the one thats sticky at the top of this forum http://www.holzapfel-online.de/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=getit&lid=8

my details are
postnuke 0.7.2.3-Phoenix
php 4.2.3
latest version of gallery

There've been reports that that random block isn't working properly with v1.4 of Gallery. Jörg.... you around to help? In the mean time, I suppose you could grab the "original" random block and fiddle it into a PN block. Takes a lot more work, and isn't as pretty, though. Hopefully Jörg will be able to post a compatible update soon.

Thanks for the reply Beckett,

I had more time to scour the forum and found a solution that involves adding a line of code. It's better if I just link to that thread in case anyone reads this post and is having the same problem as that thread deals with it much better.

http://gallery.menalto.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=8622&sid=41c630d51062f7c2358afbe65fc707b3

However while this does indeed fix the problem, it just revealed more problems. I can now get a random block working on my front page as long as when I create an album and add pictures to it, i dont do anything at all to that album except add pictures. That includes changing settings for the album and even giving the album a name. If i name the album, the random block stops working immediately.

Getting a bunch of other problems too like only admin being able to add pictures, making any changes to an album generates errors or goes to page not founds links but on going back to gallery page its all fine again and the change worked. I can live with both of those for now as i just want to initially manage the gallery myself as an admin. its really the above problem im wanting to try and resolve.

I'll keep checking back for any progress on how the random block is developing and any info i can get on fixing probs for my particular setup.

I don't know Jörg's code at all, but the original random block available from this site uses a cache file to speed it up, and only updates every 24 hours, so if you run the script within 24 hours from updating, without deleting the cache file, it's possible to get errors.
