Hello all,
I just installed a new instance of Gallery2 (latest 2 version) on a paid server for a friend. The installation is handled by a script given by the hosting service and there are some differences in the result.
In particular, she created her albums and populated them... but a non logged-in user was being asked for a password. I disabled the "Password Protected Albums" plugin (is that a good idea?) and now if you are not logged in you only see an empty album...
I basically want a single user, and everything viewable by guests.
"Everybody" already has "[core] View item" in the main album permissions.
Thanks

Never use any scripts provided by anybody to install simple web applications such as G2.
Download the package from here, upload to the web space and navigate to the folder with your favourite web browser and you'll be better off.

Yes, I know that and I've been bitten by this problem in the past, but I've tried twice to do a manual install: they don't provide an ssh access, so it's a pain in the butt to transfer the files via ftp.
Anyway, back to my question, could there be a user's album (with images) and a guest album (empty) and they are shown in the different contexts ? How would I disable that ?

That's the exact behavior G2 (or any version of Gallery) has out of the box. What plugins are installed and activated under Site Admin > Plugins ?

The "User album" plugin is disabled, if that's what you want to know. It doesn't change anything whether it's activated or not...

Also, post the system details:

A bit more info. The permissions on the top album are:
Everybody [rating] All access
Everybody [cart] Add to cart
Everybody [core] View item
Everybody [digibug] Print
Everybody [ecard] Send eCards
Everybody [fotokasten] Print
Everybody [photoworks] Print
Everybody [shutterfly] Print
Everybody [snapgalaxy] Print
If I set "Everybody [All access]", then guests can view the albums fine, but then they can also add/change whatever they want... Why does "View item" not do what I think it should do ?!?

Try the default permissions of View All Versions or if you don't want them viewing the full-size version, View Item AND View Resized Versions
I believe View Item only allows thumbs to be viewed.
