Hi all, I'm new here and just found out about this site. Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong forums. I am currently trying to set up a site which can be seen here: www.slimFolio.com. What I want to do is to create a user gallery. So that people can register and upload their works. and then other users can comment on it. Does the gallery offered on this site suite this? I'm basically planning to create something like www.behance.net and www.dribbble.com Any feedback/suggestions? Thanks. |

Yes and no. . . the user systems in both of your examples are much more complicated than just a user directory with images.
In gallery 3, you can setup a system where users create accounts, are given directories, and may upload images. Anyone can comment on any image, you can see the views easily.
You'd have to configure something for "likes" internally, I don't think there's a module that does that yet. But both of those systems have much more complicated user account controls and internal messaging systems and blog like functions that gallery doesn't do.
Gallery displays massive amounts of pictures quickly in an organized fashion. It isn't really a CMS / Website replacement.
I'd say a good portion of your image needs would be met with Gallery, but your user system needs you'd probably find lacking a bit. Granted, you can build from there if you want. People are already developing modules to hook into systems like WordPress, and with the RestAPI, you can integrate the gallery with just about anything you can imagine.

for the different modules that are available to Gallery 3, it might help you on your quest.

There are two versions of Gallery ... G2 and G3 (There used to be a third called G1 but it has been forked as a totally new project - In reality, it is a dead project).
Note that despite the naming schemes, each of them is a totally different application and they do not represent upgrades over the others.
In terms of your needs, I think you will find that you can easily do what you want to do with G2 which is more mature/complete than G3 at this point.
Have a look at the following modules to start with:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:register
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:useralbum
(You can find a fairly full list here: http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules)
In terms of CMS, there are modules to tie into the popular CMS such as drupal, wordpress, joomla, geeklog, phpbb ... most of these cms/forum apps already have G2 integration packages with instructions: http://codex.gallery2.org/Integration
Alternatively, you can use the embed mode to embed G2 into your HTML.

One of the regular contributors here has a handy tool for doing this on his site: http://www.flashyourweb.com/staticpages/index.php?page=gallery2_embed-o-rator.
Here are some quick samples he has knocked together from requests on the forum such as yours:

http://www.flashyourweb.com/gallery2/photo_gallery.php
http://www.flashyourweb.com/gallery2/southjerseymarina.php

You do need to evaluate both G2 and G3 and decide which is best for you.
In summary:
G2
Pros
1. If there is something you want to do, chances are G2 already can do it.
2. Stable, mature and well understood by many in the community.
Cons
1. The developers have decided to shift attention to G3.
2. You will need to rely on community support.
G3
Pros
1. The developers are focussing attention on this and so is the community
2. New stuff being added everyday
Cons
1. Still evolving and thus relatively volatile.
2. Does not have as much of a range of options as G2
In your shoes, I'll go for G2 at this stage and take a look at G3 later ... maybe after G3.1 is released.
I consider them in a way to be like server software. You can go for stable (G2) or development (G3) versions.
Development versions get all the new goodies but may have some kinks here and there although nothing major (unlike beta for instance) while stable versions are just that ... stable.
Hope this gives you some clarity.
