Moving a Corrupted Gallery Installation

Hello,

I did a Gallery installation with a web hosting service in late 2007, and a second installation two years later. Everything was working fine on that first installation, but it looked like I had more options on the other installations. I attempted to upgrade the first installation, but that option wasn't available with my web hosting service. I didn't care about it all that much, but I got the bug to upgrade Gallery a few weeks ago. I asked my hosting service why an upgrade was not an option. They told me that I should back up the website, delete the installation of Gallery (and all of the files associated with it), do a new installation of Gallery, and then copy my files back. I didn't delete the installation, but I did a new installation in another folder. Needless to say that did not work. I copied basically every folder (g2data, CGI-bin, Modules, Themes Upgrades) to the new location and am now trying to get a new installation of Gallery to access the data.

I did go to the FAQ's section, and tried to follow the directions for moving the installation. Some of the instructions are not clear to me or I cannot do them. One instruction said to "Upgrade Gallery to the current version before moving." I don't have the option to do that and I wish I did. :-) Another instruction said to back up the database. The first step is described as "Log in to 'phpMyAdmin.' I have no idea what that is or how to even get started with that.

It seems like this should be a relatively simple process (I hope!), but I am clearly out of my league on this.

Here is my system information:

Gallery version = 2.2 core 1.2.0
PHP version = 4.4.7 cgi
Webserver = Apache
Database = mysqlt 5.0.45-log, lock.system=flock
Toolkits = ImageMagick, NetPBM, Gd, ArchiveUpload, Thumbnail
Acceleration = partial/900, partial/900
Operating system = Linux cgi1103.int.bizland.net 2.6.23.14 #1 SMP Mon Feb 11 11:38:56 EST 2008 i686
Default theme = matrix
gettext = enabled
Locale = en_US
Browser = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)
Rows in GalleryAccessMap table = 164
Rows in GalleryAccessSubscriberMap table = 3812
Rows in GalleryUser table = 2
Rows in GalleryItem table = 3702
Rows in GalleryAlbumItem table = 127
Rows in GalleryCacheMap table = 1310

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

If

I don't have the option to do that

then maybe you'll require a paid upgrade. I can do that, or you can post in the services forum.

I don't really understand what you're trying to do.

Why can't you upgrade gallery before moving it? What steps didn't you understand in the instructions?

Hello nivekiam,

According to my web hosting service, I have a corrupted Gallery installation. I am still able to upload images and create new albums, but I do not have an option (through an item named "Simple Scripts" in the service's "Control Panel") to upgrade. My web hosting service does not display a Gallery version number for my first installation. I was trying to move my images to another folder and then do another installation of Gallery. I was confused when looking at one of the instructions and it said to "Log in to 'phpMyAdmin.'" Of course I am trying to do this through my service's intall and upgrade procedures. Maybe I just need to start with the instructions here (downloading the latest version, unpacking it, etc.) and forget about using the Simple Scripts method.

I care nothing about crappy control panel installation/upgrade scripts. They all suck. I understand they make the lives of some people easier by installing stuff, but they are all fundamentally flawed when things go sideways.

If you click on this link, you'll see that upgrading G2 is nearly as simple as just uploading the new version and running through the upgrader:

That's what I'd recommend :)

Things definitely went sideways for me! :-) Thanks for the advice. I'll follow the upgrade instructions and let you know how things went.
