jpegtran & ImageMagick: Don't understand where these binary files come from, where they are put and how to find out what the path required in the config process is.

very few people need jpegtran, unless you need lossless JPEG transformations I'd skip it. Plus it has been know to interfere with some other plugins.

Gallery demands I install (and configure) some sort of graphics package.
What is best and how do I find these paths referred to?

imagemagick and netpbm if installed on your server are usually in /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin
gallery can use php's built-in GD toolkit although its a memory hog and does not support all image types.
