Shared Web Hosting

Like several others, Lunarpages has shut down my gallery (and forum) stating that they're using excessive resources. I'm done playing with them, so I'm looking for a new web host. I assume there's lots of people on here that have success stories with their G3 installation in a shared hosting environment. Could anyone recommend a quality web host?
Thanks.

Here's my opinion:

Basically, if they claim "unlimited" anything, don't use them, they cannot possibly truly mean unlimited. They are overselling services and will screw you over the first chance they get taking your money and cutting your service. However, don't think you're going to be able to host 100,000s of images for cheap and be happy with your service :)

Thanks. I'm not tech savvy enough to go with one of those VPS plans. Just about everything on their feature list is over my head, so that's probably not the way to go for me. I have a lightly traveled smf forum with about 500 users - only about 50 of which actively participate. The forum has about 10K posts and gets about 20-30 new posts a day. There is never more than 25 people in the forum at once. My G3 installation has about 4K photographs. During the season, I'll add one or two new galleries a week with about 100 photos each. I do have a lot of videos. I've been thinking of moving those to vimeo or youtube or something and just embedding them in G3. My configuration, I would think, does not cry out for a dedicated hosting play, which is what Lunarpages of course wants me to buy. So, they're out.

Given my configuration, and looking a host like pair, which configuration should I shoot for? Having always had "unlimited" bandwidth, I don't have any idea exactly how much I would use. I get about 5K visits and around 100K pageviews a day on my google analytics, and I have the aforementioned gallery and forum. And I host 7 websites on one account. Any suggestions?

I'm using Surpass Hosting's http://surpasshosting.com Power Shared plan for my gallery (have 2 galleries, 1 SMF forum, and 1 WordPress blog amongst 5 domains) without any issues or complaints. But, from your description, I get no-where near the traffic that yours does, plus neither of my galleries has over 500 photos yet. Half of my traffic is probably just from search bots poking around rather than real people.

Usually, one exceeds the CPU utilization for X amount of time, simultaneous http connections, or MySQL usage before bandwidth or disk-usage in a shared environment to get an account suspended or something (because it's impacting the performance of everyone else's site on the server).

If you were actually converting your videos using ffmpeg or something on the server, that's not going to fly on a shared server as it's CPU intensive. Most wont even allow it to be installed.

Sometimes a website can just become too popular for its own good on a shared server. :/

Best of luck,
Mark H.

not wanting to shamelessly plug my web hosting services, but i can do you a mean hosting deal if you'd like me to quote you for it. just let me know what sorta resources you're after and your budget and i'm sure i can accommodate :) however, as mark says, if you're expecting a *lot* of traffic, you might be better off going dedicated of vps rather than shared hosting. unless of course, you want to use my amazon s3 cdn module, which offloads a lot of the resource fetching from the hosting server to amazon's cdn.

all my servers operate g3 without any issues. they have to, as i develop for it on there!

I've been on iWeb www.iweb.com for ages and been very very satisfied with the service! You get 600go and unlimited bandwith.

mm. not bad at all. however them services are *definately* oversold. the 600gb of disk space has a handful of restrictions on it, and i guess their t's & c's gives them the right to go through your stuff looking for files that violate the rules. (i.e; the content must be related to your website, not used for backup purposes, etc). also, their unlimited bandwidth truely seems to be that, but, they do restrict you to 2% of system resources. so if you have a very busy site, be sure that they'll switch your account off because you're hogging resources.

be careful. sometimes the good sounding ones (in terms of resources) aren't always the best! :) whatever you decide, read the terms and conditions carefully!

How about iweb.com versus lunarpages.com. I'm on lunarpages, and it's soooo slow. It takes about 30 seconds to load a page of about 25 thumbs. I'm looking for a faster host.

Frankly, they both suck.

EDIT: I just realized I haven't had experience with iweb.com so I don't know. I thought you were talking about someone else. From appearances, they look like your typical overselling services shared host though.... Lunarpages, I haven't seen a speedy site ever from anyone hosted there.

I use hostgator, and I have gallery3 site there with 19GB of pictures, and generally only have a little traffic, but obviously getting those 19GB of pictures up there put me at ~20GB usage for the first month. I'm at ~2GB for this month which is almost over.

They haven't complained or tried to upgrade me, and the site works well.

They say unlimited everything, which is obviously a marketing setup; they don't limit you on anything in particular, but if you're starting to hog up a shared server they'll push you for an upgrade. Their biggest issue seems to be CPU time. I have Django site on there also that spawns some processes, and if I have some people hitting that (3-4 threads per user) while I'm logged into Cpanel and ssh (another 4-5 threads) and some other stuff, things start going downhill. But with just gallery, I've supported 20+ simultaneous people browsing pictures without a noticeable slowdown.

The biggest issue is no ffmpeg, which sucks. But most shared hosts don't allow it.

Edit: Added part about CPU time.
