@micrafty: Neither of those features are gone, they just haven't been written yet. Gallery 3 is a complete rewrite from the ground up, we can't just wave a magic wand and get it all working right away, we have to actually write it all. We're doing the work in priority order and the features you use happen to be a lower priority for most users, so they aren't done yet. Hang in there, I suspect that there will be modules for both of them (they're not particularly hard features for the community to write...)

Oh wow. That wasn't how I had read the other threads. Thank you for letting me know. I've been putting off making a decision on the site because it seemed the only viable solution was to start completely over. I've been so upset about the whole thing.

Any guess on a timeline? 3 months? 6 months? longer?

Hi there,

I found out one thing that would make me much more happy.
Some kind of separator element is what I would like to have in the gallery. For example I have an album (ok, actually this is the top album) that has subalbums for every year (2010,2009,2008,2007...) and will have albums from this year with recent and future dates :) (15. 01. 2011., 21. 02. 2011., etc). The thing I need is a separator-like element between this year and the past years albums, so the albums from this year comes to the first places in the top album and then comes a separator (either a <tr> in the html <table> element with some visual separator like line or something, or either only a new row in the table without line). Of course it is possible, because everything is possible in gallery3 :) but how should I start implement it?
I had an idea to extend the item types with a new type of 'separator' (added to album and photo), and when an album page is generated that contains this kind of element it simply puts a new line in the table, but I'm afraid a lot of code does not expect this 3rd type of items and throws an exception.
Please give me some hints!

Thanks,
JM|Tomi

I must say I am also very disappointed with 3.0. I finished importing my photos last night (around 6000) and have been playing with the themes and such to see how inflexible this release is. Sloppy views also, the random image and tags step over your photo. Here is screen grab, I am shocked how sloppy this looks: http://imm.io/2YgH

I loaded the sobriety theme and could not find a way to the admin functions to disable the theme! I had to copy the wind theme over the sobriety just so I could get back my admin menus.

The Wind theme, 3 across take it or leave it. How the gallery team could make that their default theme is odd. And then the mouse overs, why can't there be a more traditional option to see the data without a mouse over.

If I stay with 2.0 I know in the long run that's a mistake, as it will eventually be abandoned for patches and such. But right now 3.0 is a big downgrade.

Sorry to here that you are disappointed with the 3.0 version. Others seem to like it.
The screen shot you show has a very large resize and the theme that you chose was written for a different resize.
Perhaps the wide_wind theme would work better for the resizes you want?
As for the sobriety theme: I have never tired it so can only say that most admin functions use a different theme and perhaps you did not find the admin button?
Perhaps you can create a theme that does not have the mouseover effects that you don't like?

We understand that G3 is not for everybody and you are welcome to stay with G2. It is stable and secure.

Perhaps you might want to start a new thread if you have specific issues you want help with in G3 as in a 3 page thread it is hard to keep track.

Gary, please try the theme "Greydragon." It has what you are looking for and is the most developed and active theme to date. You can have 4 columns with it if you want. There are some things about G3 that are not as flexible as G2. However, the G3 core is extremely robust in that the core can be modified using modules and css, and modules are taking off. The css capabilities of G3 are astounding. One thing to keep in mind is to limit the size of your preview images to a width that does not cause interference with the mechanics of the theme you are using. The final full sized image will open in overlay mode w/o problems. It's a testament to what you can do using css and modules. Keep in mind that G3 is HIGHLY css driven and that you will need to use Firebug and use css in a "custom" css file. More information is available at the Greydragon codex page. Please see my site here to see if you like it better than the theme you are using, and keep in mind everything custom on it is done with css and modules:

Gary: Maybe look at my website www.technobilder.de/gallery2/ where I have my albums sorted quite like you. But I dont have 1 main album, instead every year gets its own top album with the month and subalbums inside. For me this is quite nice and very clear to follow.

Posting a feedback for gallery3.
Been a gallery2 user, migrated to gallery3. Awesome thing! Stunning simplicity+usability+performance!
Still have a lack of some tiny useful features but thats fixable.
Author, keep things coming the same way!

add:

some minor "bugs", opera-related generally
1)in opera pointing and clicking checkboxes is very non-precise.
2)Opera unable to change album description. Just title. IE changes description with no issue.
3)How do i place watermark on photos only? (excluding previews i mean)

At the present time you can't.
There is a few wartermark feature requests in the tracker.

Thanks for the reply. Already found:

From "admin_watermarks.php", line #140. Del the "thumb" target ;-)

Quote:
foreach (array("thumb", "resize") as $target) {

and by the way, haven't found "watermark module" neither here: http://codex.gallery2.org/Category:Gallery_3:Modules or here: http://www.gallerymodules.com/

Because the watermark is a 'core' module, that is part of gallery3, not an 'external' module.

There is no codex page for it as nobody has written it. Care to contribute?

Another issue to fix:
album sorting methods are totally messed up.
1)Random sorting works, but does not allow to move over photos with "next>" button flawlessly.
2)Sorting random and then switching to "manual sort" does not work. It simply does not switch.
3)There is module which allows not to count admin views of photos.IMHO This functionality should be included in core by default.

Thank you.

@XPbIM3:
1) Please file a ticket for that, I'll fix it in 3.0.1
2) I can't reproduce this -- please try the experimental 3.0.1 code to see if the bug still exists
3) Can't include everything in the core...

Another question about random sorting mechanism:

I have random sorting enabled
When i refresh page the order of photos stays.
When i change "ascending" to "descending" the order of photos turns backward but stays sorted as they were before.

But how can i mix the order of photos as many times as i want? in other words i want it to be true random and re-sort on every refresh(or maybe every day?/or on "random enabled" is set/or every anything)

The random resort on each page visit is not what it is. It is random for each time the admin sorts the album.

yes, this is assumed

but order of photos is the same when i set it to random for first time, and set the random order again.

no matter how many times you apply "random" sorting, the order of photos is always the same.

Do you not intend to support Gallery3 on IIS, or is this just a temporary thing during development?

Unless a knowledgeable Windows PHP developer wants to come on board and spend 100s of hours a year providing coding support and support in the forums, Windows and also IIS won't be a supported platform.
