I saw them both and got inspired, even if none of them worked for me.
And non of them intend to crate a WPG2 sucessor.
I created a feature-Wish list at http://wpg3.digitaldonkey.de and started some testing.
But I hope that some people join me, because I want to have at least the features of WPG2 on solid extensible base. And it is definitively a lot of work.

Do you plan to have a full wpg2 version (I need to update my wpg2 sites.. ) or you wanna implement just the imagechooser function?
Are there reasons why you didn't you rely on WP_Http class and use pear instead?

I don't have the project to be dead :D I have a lot of things to do in my live and to see, so I am still alive !
For the moment, I am in debug mode in order to have a stable code ... There are a lot of people with different problems with my plugin and configuration of Gallery3.
I have a small plan of features what I want and need. In this features, I am thinking about :
- an upload tools inside WP3
- a page which show all gallery / pictures like stevenh done (see http://gallery.menalto.com/node/98260)
- CAS SSO login in G3 with the users of WP3
- etc.
But, for the moment, my goal is not to make a version3 of WPG2 but to express myself in code writing.
I didn't know the WP_HTTP when I begun writing code, I used PEAR package in my other dev and PEAR lets me independant of WP3 if I want to port my plugin to an other CMS.

well, the zip file on wordpress's site is empty. it downloads as a 188 byte empty zip file, and thus won't install, for obvious reasons
