I've created a fresh install with new empty database on RC2 and everything appeared to install fine but when the installer said to start using Gallery3 the next page comes up blank. No installation errors in /var/logs.
(http://gallery3-beta.szewczuk.net comes up blank)

I've also tried the upgrader since I have RC1 installed on my 1and1.com server and it also fails but I have a screen shot (G3_RC2_Install_Capture_error.JPG). I've also attached "Upgrade All" capture screen. I have restored my gallery3 back to RC1 (http://webgallery3.szewczuk.net)

Any clues (I'm not a programmer)--
bharat has helped me in the past with 1and1.com problems if this is such the case.

Here is our resident 1&1 expert:

he might be able to help you.

FYI 1&1 uses Apache 1.x is NOT supported. Please verify your Apache version.

TomS

I've attached what I found in 1and1.com's FAQ section regarding Apache for 'Linux Shared Hosting". I've also sent an email to 1and1.com Tech support to verify my apache version since httpd -v doesn't work. I will post their response. Puzzled: I'm not having any trouble with Gallery3 RC1 or Gallery2.3 on this apache.

G2 did not have this requirement.

This is the response I received from 1and1.com tech support about Apache version installed. It is 3.1 and that should not be an issue. Also, I have already added the directives in .htaccess to use php 5

"Dear Thomas Szewczuk, (Customer ID: xxxxxxxx)

Thank you for contacting us.
The current version of our Apache Server is 3.1. With regards to your PHP problems, we are currently running PHP version 4. If you are using a higher version, like PHP 5, you can however parse the php. Please refer on this link provided for set of instructions:
http://faq.1and1.com/scripting_languages_supported/php/5.html

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

They mean Apache 1.3. There's no Apache 3.1. We don't officially support Apache 1.3, which means that if you have a lot of problems we won't go to great lengths to support you. You're probably already using PHP5 because otherwise G3 won't work at all.

Do you have the file themes/wind/page.html.php? That's the file it's trying to find. Are you using a custom theme? If so, make sure you upgraded that to the latest version as well.

I will try to tackle one problem at a time because I don't want to trash my G2 RC1 installation with the RC2 updater.

(1) Fresh Install ( http://gallery3-beta.szewczuk.net which points to gallery3_rc2 on server)
--downloaded the latest RC2 zip and ftp'd to server home directory
--unpacked into gallery3_rc2 directory
--updated .htaccess to add php5 directives and uncommented the Apache rewrite stuff at bottom of file
--created new mysql database with nothing in it
--pointed browser to http://gallery3-beta.szewczuk.net/installer
--supplied all the database inputs at which point it alerted me to record the admin password
--clicked to "Start using Gallery3"
--page comes up blank and can't logon as admin
-/var/logs contains no files

G3 RC2 main page is blank http://gallery3-beta.szewczuk.net

Did you have any luck in that thread?

I've gone through a complete fresh reinstall of gallery3 rc2 and still no errors in /var/logs and screen is blank when I go to the new g3 site. I'm dead in the water and out of ideas. If there is anything you can suggest this would be greatly appreciated.

Try this FAQ: FAQ: How do I see debug information?

Do you get anything useful in your web browser?

I have installed Gallery3 RC2 on a shared server at 1&1.
Simply uncomment the .htaccess mod_rewrite part everything works properly.

In your .htaccess on line 62:

# <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
# RewriteEngine On
# RewriteBase /
# RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
# RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
# RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?kohana_uri=$1 [QSA,PT,L]
# RewriteRule ^$ index.php?kohana_uri=$1 [QSA,PT,L]
# </IfModule>

leave it this way:

 <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
   RewriteEngine On
   RewriteBase /
   RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
   RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
   RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?kohana_uri=$1 [QSA,PT,L]
   RewriteRule ^$ index.php?kohana_uri=$1 [QSA,PT,L]
 </IfModule>

This works if your domain or subdomain link directly at the folder of the gallery3 instalation.
If you have a gallery3 installation in the subfolder, have to indicate a path, for example your gallery have in /portfolios/gallery3, your .htaccess leave it this way:

 <IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
   RewriteEngine On
   RewriteBase /portfolios/gallery3
   RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
   RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
   RewriteRule ^(.*)$ index.php?kohana_uri=$1 [QSA,PT,L]
   RewriteRule ^$ index.php?kohana_uri=$1 [QSA,PT,L]
 </IfModule>

doing this, it should work without problems.

Regards and sorry for my bad english :P

meisok -- Thanks for the reply!
I had previously updated .htaccess to enable mod_rewrite and I left RewriteBase set to "/" because 1and1 Domain management allows me to define what home directory to use (in this case it was ~/gallery3_rc2). I did, however, try setting RewriteBase to /gallery3_rc2 and that resulted in server error 500. I have now reset .htaccess back to RewriteBase to "/" which resulted in the erros below:

bharat -- Thanks for your reply also!
I am not able to see the apache logs in /var/logs and there is nothing in gallery3:/var/logs except an .htaccess file. However, I did create the local G3 RC2 file local.php and it returned this error message:

Warning: require(/homepages/34/d253649540/htdocs/gallery3_rc2/application/Bootstrap.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /homepages/34/d253649540/htdocs/gallery3_rc2/index.php on line 94

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required '/homepages/34/d253649540/htdocs/gallery3_rc2/application/Bootstrap.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php5') in /homepages/34/d253649540/htdocs/gallery3_rc2/index.php on line 94

I checked ~gallery3_rc2/application/bootstrap.php and it exists (chmod file to 755)

cd ~gallery3_rc2/application/
ls -al
drwxr-xr-x 3 u49771825 ftpusers 39 Jul 17 11:02 .
drwxr-xr-x 9 u49771825 ftpusers 4096 Jul 17 11:15 ..
-rwxr-xr-x 1 u49771825 ftpusers 2167 Jul 5 22:47 bootstrap.php
drwxr-xr-x 2 u49771825 ftpusers 23 Jul 17 11:02 config

So it still looks like G3RC2 can't find files in ~gallery3_rc2/application

I have attached my .htaccess and error files

http://gallery3-beta.szewczuk.net (broken)
http://webgallery3.szewczuk.net (is the current G2RC1 version working)

My .htaccess is the same except for the first three lines (try changing the folder name: gallery, gallery3. If you reinstall, uncomment the mod_rewrite on .htaccess before install).
I do not understand it does not work, my gallery goes well (http://gallery3.meisok.es) on 1&1

I really don't know what fixed this but I did the following and somehow the problem has gone away:
(left the original G3 R1 version in tact)

(1) Removed the G3R2 mysql database
(2) completely removed G3 RC2 (including .htaccess) and reinstalled my php.ini file in root (somehow i removed this in previous installs)
(3) mkdir -p ~szewczuk.net/gallery32 (yes, szewczuk is a sub-dir also); chmod 755 ~szewczuk.net/gallery32
(4) downloaded the latest git version of G3R2 (and user contrib modules / themes) and uploaded to 1and1 server Step (3) dir
(5) unzipped latest G3R2 in step (3) directory and renamed from gallery3 to gallery32 (created by zip)
(6) took meisok's advice and modified .htaccess file before G3R2 installation with the following exceptions
a. logged onto 1and1 user i/f-->domains and re-pointed sub-domain webgallery3.szewczuk.net to directory ~szewczuk.net/gallery32
b. recreated new (empty) mysql database using 'G3_' table prefix and set db password
c. modified .htaccess file

--Added the following directives to the top of the file and saved it:
Options +Indexes
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
AddHandler x-mapp-php5 .php
--left RewriteBase to '/'
--un-commented the apache mod_rewrite.c stuff bottom of .htaccess

(7) in firefox, went to http://webgallery3.szewczuk.net/installer
(8) filled in all database data inputs
(9) This time when directed to use the new gallery3, it came up OK
(10) at this point I logged on as admin and changed the password then logged out
(11) went back to my old G3R1 site and moved /var to new G3R2:/var
(12) brought the new G3R2 site back up again and now it came in fully populated with my albums (and other stuff)
(13) went through and reinstalled the latest usable modules/themes from my old G3R1 installation
(14) uninstalled any modules I wasn't using in G3R1
(15) Uploaded and installed new themes and activated graydragon_w (which has some problems)

(16) to see the new install: http://webgallery3.szewczuk.net

Thanks much for all the help!
TomS
