I couldn't get anything to work properly with my previous installation so I deleted the whole thing, downloaded gallery2 from scratch. Meanwhile, I have a directory in cpanel called fotosbyerika.com. I uploaded gallery2 into that directory. So now I have fotosbyerika.com/gallery2..... My SQL database is ...._fotosbyerika and seems perfect. Anyhow, I thought I'd be able to get things happening but when I try to install fotosbyerika.com/gallery2/install.php I get the following error:
Apache/2.2.14 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.14 OpenSSL/0.9.8e-fips-rhel5 DAV/2 mod_python/3.3.1 Python/2.4.3 mod_auth_passthrough/2.1 mod_bwlimited/1.4 FrontPage/5.0.2.2635 mod_jk/1.2.25 mod_perl/2.0.4 Perl/v5.8.8 Server at fotosbyerika.com Port 80
When I try this fotosbyerika.com/gallery2/install, I get this error:
Warning: require_once(/home/cecon46/public_html/fotosbyerika.com/gallery2/install/steps/../../modules/core/classes/GalleryCoreApi.class) [function.require-once]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/cecon46/public_html/fotosbyerika.com/gallery2/install/steps/WelcomeStep.class on line 21

I'm sorry I'm such a hopeless non-techie. Can you help me? I also don't understand where I'm supposed to put install instructions:
$ mysqladmin -uroot create gallery2
$ mysql gallery2 -uroot -e"GRANT ALL ON gallery2.* TO username@localhost IDENTIFIED BY 'password'"
I've made up the phpinfo.php file like you said to do.

I would say you are missing files.
Are you FTPing the files?

Then you are missing files, I guess.
FAQ: How can I make sure that my installation files are all intact?

When I type http://fotosbyerika.com/gallery2/upgrade/index.php I get this warning:

Could it have anything to do with the fact that I have gallery installed as a subdirectory? Should I have installed it this way:
fotosbyerika and have all the files there?
OK, I'm trying this. I have changed the name and am installing gallery2 by changing the name of the folder from gallery2 to fotosbyerika. That way all the files will be in that directory. I figure it's worth a try. Nothing else seems to be working. This is supposed to be easy, right?

As I said I deleted everything and started over. Then everything went well until I reached number 8 of the installation (installing Gallery core). I got an error to say it's only partially installed. It said to go back to system check. There were two warnings there but what should I have done about it?
Output buffering disabled Warning
Warning: Output buffering is enabled in your PHP by the output_buffering parameter(s) in php.ini. Gallery can function with this setting - downloading files is even faster - but Gallery might be unable to serve large files (e.g. large videos) and run into the memory limit. Also, some features like the progress bars might not work correctly if output buffering is enabled unless ini_set() is allowed.
Gallery file integrity Warning
+ Missing files (66)
You had mentioned missing files before. I downloaded the typical installation files and not the full one. Should I have downloaded the full one? How can I find what files are missing?
Do I have to start over again?

Here is what Step 8 says:
Core module is only partially installed.
Error installing Gallery Core
Something went wrong when we tried to install the core module. What to do next?
1.Go to the System Checks step of the installer and make sure all checks shows 'Success'. A common issue is that the file integrity warning is ignored.
2.If there are no warnings or failures in the System Checks step, empty your storage directory and delete the database tables and start the installation process a second time (redo all steps).
3.Please visit the G2 FAQ and read the Known issues section of the Readme.
4.If the problem persists, please copy the installation log which is located at /home/cecon46/public_html/fotosbyerika.com/g2data_gold44//install_8c0c94fdc0.log and attach it (as install.log.zip) to a new forum topic in the G2 support forum or, if possible, just add a link to the install.log in the forum topic such that the support staff can analyze it if necessary.

Then you need to get those missing files to the server from the download you got. Perhaps your ftp client is not getting all the files to the server?
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gallery/files/gallery2/2.3.1/gallery-2.3.1-typical-en.zip/download
should have the files you need.

OK, once again I deleted everything and started over. Still got the missing files thing but was able to install them manually. Now the only other problem is this:
Warning: Output buffering is enabled in your PHP by the output_buffering parameter(s) in php.ini. Gallery can function with this setting - downloading files is even faster - but Gallery might be unable to serve large files (e.g. large videos) and run into the memory limit. Also, some features like the progress bars might not work correctly if output buffering is enabled unless ini_set() is allowed.
How do I correct that?

Continue with some features missing or ask your host to fix.

Not to worry. I went ahead and clicked the next button and Gallery installed. Now, however, I have to redo a lot of stuff but at least it's installed.
Thanks for your patience.

Gallery may be installed but it sure isn't working as it should. I still don't have a front page even though I tried htmlblock and minicms.
I'll have no choice but to go back to Coppermine. Maybe Gallery hasn't worked out all its kinks or the docs are not clear enough. I see all sorts of help around but they all seem to be techies who talk their techie talk. I don't know what on earth they're talking about.
I just wanted a pretty site so I can sell my photographs.

G2 doesn't have a front page. Even with htmlblock you have to create it yourself and link it into your your website correctly.
It is true that G2 is not suitable for everyone.
