FYI... Windows is not supported.....

Quote:
Scope #2, Supported Configurations - Gallery 3 is supported on Linux / Unix servers, running a MySQL 5 and an Apache 2.2 web server with PHP 5.2. Emphasis on supported, not necessarily required. It may well work with MySQL 4.1 on MS Windows as well. But the Gallery team is going to focus its energy on making the best possible product on the supported configurations.

Please understand my reply is not meant as an attack, but with other products such as photopost, phpfox, phpmotion, they give the same bs answers....We don't support windows. Now I'm going to give my thoughts on this while slamming it because it would be pointless to bitch if I don't explain why. Just like if someone said "gallery sucks"... Well buddy, that doesn't tell me why, or anything, so how can I base your experience as valid? Capiche?

Every program that runs on linux can run on windows. 90% of it to be exact. And I've seen many say you won't get memcoder blah blah...Well we did. I understand just like how Adobe is focusing on the Linux os first to get the 64bit flash out, then windows due to their reasons but they still are supporting windows. They have to essentially. Same with Gallery...Get the linux G3 final out, and continue helping the populatioin out there that run it off a windows box. Yes, I know XP/Vista is not ideal, and I disagree with the users trying to do SERVER tasks on a desktop OS. But we also have COMPETENT people out here. Plenty running Server 2000, 2003, 2008, 2008 R2. And the prodct even stated it's ties with Microsoft to streamline it.

So this "while it may run on windows, we don't support it..." Cut me a freaking break. I'm sick and tired of hearing measely excuses. Yes, I may have had some Captain tonight ;) But I can run 64bit PHP (fusion-x lan) and now PHP 5.3 is 64bit., I can run MySQL 64bit. Why not retain some windows gurus (scripters, admins/engineers/network turds) to get involved and parallel with this and try to get everyone working.

I don't use Apache. I have before, IIS is very competent (provided the admin is as this is where the arguement becomes valid.....Does the admin know WTF he's doing?) I work for one of the largest medical advertising companies in the world with over 400 locations. All Windows.

I've also been with Gallery since birth. I will shit talk any other gallery product because I'm very loyal to this one. But this continued windows support. Change the attitude. I have 20 servers constantly at my disposal. I would offer to be a guineea pig anytime. I'm sure others would too.

/rant off.

It is simply a time and resource issue. Too few of both. Is that a good enough excuse?

We aim to create an amazing product that at least 80% of you can use. We've decided that the most common platform, available to all (even if it's not what you're using now, it's something that you could be using easily) is Apache 2, PHP 5, and MySQL 5. This doesn't mean that Gallery 3 won't ever work on alternative platforms, but it does mean that the existing developers aren't going to go out of our way to make it work there, at least not for the first release. If Gallery 3 works on Windows + IIS + PHP perfectly without us trying, that's great, but this policy lets us take advantage of unique features of Apache and MySQL that are not available on other platforms. If you'd really like to see Gallery 3 work on some other platform we invite you to come talk to us. Seriously! Corporate support is welcome as well: for example, if Microsoft would like to own our Windows Server support and is willing to do most of the work and QA on that part, we're definitely willing to cooperate on that.

If you care to participate in helping others with windows/G3 issues feel free to help out. If you find fixes for issues in the code that can work on the supported platforms as well as windows then feel free to create a fork in GIT so others can collaborate and fixes will get merged into trunk. Some code from other forks have made it into G2 trunk already. So collaboration is working.

Hey Ranger187, I feel your pain. But feel mine, too. I don't use Windows, nor does anybody else on the dev team. We are understaffed and overworked trying to turn out a quality product in between day jobs, families, other commitments. There's only so much we can do in a day, so we're choosing to focus it in the place where we can do the most good. If a strong, competent and (more importantly) committed PHP developer shows up who wants to put his time into Windows then we'll get behind it. But until then, I'm making do with what I've got. I wish I had a better answer for you.

Trust me, I know where you are coming from. I work 15 hour days, have a family and all that. And I fully support Gallery even with some of the issues I have. There's got to be a php developer out there that can help. This project is too well known for one not to exist.
