.htaccess files not allowed on Yahoo servers

I am a newbie to setting up websites and am having trouble installing Gallery 2.3 on my Yahoo hosting site.

When I transfer the unzipped Gallery files from my computer to the Yahoo hosting site using FileZilla the .htaccess files will not transfer. When I read the Yahoo help files and talk with Yahoo support they say they do not allow .htaccess files on their servers for security reasons.

I have tried renaming the files before uploading and then renaming them back on the Yahoo servers but the Yahoo servers would not allow the rename to .htaccess to occur.

Has anyone else run into this problem with .htaccess files not uploading, and if so, how did you work around it?

Do I need to go to another hosting site, like Dreamhost, that will possibly allow the uploading of all Gallery files?

Any help would be appreciated.

There are many posts in these forums about this. I don't know what people did exactly to get around it. I'm pretty sure the general consensus is if you're running on Yahoo's servers. Good luck :)

Search the forums for others who have had issues with Yahoo, I don't remember the specifics.

I have searched through the forums and tried renaming the files but that did not work. I have not been able to find a post that was helpful in resolving this. If someone that has direct experience could point me to the right posting or direction I would appreciate it. So is Yahoo not a good hosting solution, and if not, what about Dreamhost?

In my opinion. No. Dreamhost, I only know there are others who have used them successfully.

Here's my opinion:

I ended up switching over to Dreamhost where they have the Gallery 2 software setup as part of a One Click installation. I am now up and running on Dreamhost and looking forward to working with this software. Thank you for your help on this.

I am reliably informed that the alternative to .htaccess is to use php.ini (which has its own set of coding - but hugely similar to .htaccess). The best workaround for this mess is to hire an established professional to install your script (and give you a hint on successful upgrades for that type of script. Of course, Yahoo web hosting is not very nice as they don't have C-panel which would make life easy). They do have the reliability advantage however, and their servers are hardly ever down.
