I have just uploaded Gallery3 to my webhost but gets this messages - what does it means ? Warning: is_writable() [function.is-writable]: open_basedir restriction in effect. That's an interesting error. What OS is your server, and what version of PHP do you have? It seems that realpath("var") is empty (because you don't have a var dir-- that's normal) and that's causing a weird failure. I've got a fix for that, which I'll check. In the meantime, either do "mkdir var" or browse to gallery3/installer to get by this problem.

I just installed the new version of Gallery3 alpha4 and now there is no problems.
