Drupal 6 just blew my mind. If you install the Browscap and Mobile Theme modules, and some mobile-friendly themes, then D6 can automatically serve a different theme, only based on User-Agent. Essentially, you can configure D6 to offer very lightweight and terse themes to mobile users.

I did this on my blog http://florin.myip.org/blog/ and now if you browse it with a mobile device, you get a mobile-friendly theme instead of the default one. This is completely transparent, the user doesn't have to do anything.

Will G3 offer the infrastructure to create custom modules that can accomplish the same thing?

I am aware of the difficulties of displaying image galleries on mobile devices but, assuming a clever theme can alleviate them, it would be nice to have this capability in G3.

Sure! It will be a theme or theme set that can accomplish this. Some work is already being done in this regard.
