Is there any way to start G3 translation?

I hope it will be in gettext format.

Gallery3 won't be using gettext. It requires too many files, and requires tooling to do conversions. Instead, we're using a web based translation system that is very cool. Stay tuned, we'll unveil it in alpha 2.

In Alpha 2, there are some basic localization components. What's still missing, is installing existing translations. Right now, you have to translate everything yourself. While the UI makes it fun to translate, we'll soon provide means to download existing translations to your Gallery (and means to easily share your translations with the community).

Language related features in alpha 2:
- Select the default language and which languages to offer to your users at "admin -> settings -> languages".
- Users can select a language preference in "modify profile" when logged in.
- Translate the user interface as admin: "options -> enable translation mode." Then at the bottom of each page, click on "translate" to translate the strings that appear on that page.

Later on, we'll also add a way for guests to select a language preference.

Tested and it's OK

Missing two features.

* Button to copy original string to localized (in case of many variables or names).
* Button or form to submit finished translation.

For now could not find any strings with date or time. But dates and times shuld be localized too some how. Maybe by defining locale.

@copy button:
yep, it's in there, but commented out because of some issue I have to work around. :)

@button to submit finished translation:
hmm, there's a save button. isn't that what you're looking for?

@date / number formatting:
definitely. just filed a ticket to keep track of this feature.

I mean submit to developers, for use in other installations. But I know that you're working on server side support. Which seems cool for me.

Can't wait for first release!

I like the new interactive translation in G3a3. Makes localization a lot more fun.

Here are some questions and issues I noticed so far:

1. Some text strings are not available to the Translate Text interface. Like "Setting Saved" message after I clicked "Save". I think they are created from Javascript?

2. Format strings are displayed with parameters replaced in the translation text box. For example, "Photos %from_number - %to_number of %total" is displayed with the 3 %parameters replaced. This makes updating translation quite annoying.

3. Does newly submitted translation just overwrite previous ones in the localization server? Is there a review process?

4. I see some broken up sentences. Those are OK in English but BAD in other languages especially Chinese. One example is "No comments yet. Be the first to" and "comment". The grammar is totally different in Chinese and the programmaticly inserted space is just wrong. Please change them to format strings.

That's all so far. Thanks for the great work!

Oh. One other thing. I see number of approved translations under Localization contributions here in my account page. Is this related to the new localization process?

@stephenju: 1) we're working on that issue. 2) I can't reproduce that.. can you take a screenshot for us? 3) there isn't yet, but there will be a community-based review process so that people can vote for the best translation for a given string. it will be very transparent. 4) I fixed the broken up comment string in svn. If you find others, please report them and we'll fix them! And the "approved translations" is the number of translations you've submitted (good find!) we'll be improving that interface as we get closer to the final release. Thanks for the feedback!

Here's a screenshot made with zh_TW localization. The browser is Firefox 3.5 nightly. Safari show the same result.

Note the "TRANSLATION TO 繁體中文" box has the variables replaced already. This makes it hard to update the translation.

@stephenju fantastic! I've been able to reproduce the problem, and I've created a ticket for it here http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/gallery/ticket/203

Thanks. But is this an unique issue to zh_TW? I would imagine it's across the board.

Also, did someone translated some terms in en_US to French? I updated the translation and my Home is now Accueil. :) If en_US is still the language G3 is programming in, maybe we should disallow updating it in the server database?

Surprisingly, this isn't happening for every language. We'll get to the bottom of it. And yes, it looks like somebody has put some French translations in for the English text-- we'll be improving our moderation system to prevent this type of thing from happening as we get closer to the final release.

Wow. I (and all 3 zh_TW users out there) feel so important now. :)

Moderation aside, shouldn't translation of en_US completely disabled in the software since it's the language the app is programmed to?

Some issues:

1) The translation modulo seems not to work for me in IE (using version 7). When I move the mouse over the strings list, the module UI closes down. It works in firefox.

2) Not able to localize content in Dialog boxes like add phto, add album, etc.

Hey,

I Translated G3 a3 to Hebrew which is Right to Left language, I noticed several Issues.

1. Wrong Indentation (To Left insted of To Right)
2. When Using mixed Language Lines the text is not presented currectlly (sample available in the image LanguageRTL-SwitchDir2.JPG)
those two issues can be solved by using the dir=rtl html attrib.

* please note that not all English words shoould be translated (eg : ImageMagik) and english word in rtl language would scramble the line words order.
* other issue to notice is some fields dir should not be touched during rtl adjustments (eg : Log Viewer) - it is nativlly containing english text and there is no reason to format it otherwise.

Should i open Tickets for those issues ?

Thanks.

How do I remove all locally translated terms? I want to start from fresh on translation by just having the translation downloaded from official server.

tiberiu - G3 a3 Translation is very easy... (requires no tech skill's), my post was about bugs in indentation and localization and a possible resolution for it.

I would like to hear from someone how to proceed (Opening a ticket, getting the source and modifying it), I'm new to contributing issues but I got fairly good tech eye and experience. (on web / db / programming - mostly scripting lang)

if I want to contrib to the Web UI issues what is the way to do this ?

10x,

@d1p: yes, please file a ticket for that here http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/gallery/newticket We'll definitely fix that.

@stephenju: you can do this query truncate g3_outgoing_translations; in mysql and all your local translations should go away.

@d1P: (very) basic BiDi support is in: http://apps.sourceforge.net/trac/gallery/ticket/160.

but you'll quickly notice, that it's not great yet. far from it.

can you please report issues as you discover them?

also, i guess we'll need to move the whole sidebar (album info, other blocks) from the right to the left. is that the case?

Hello again. May I kindly vote for this in ticket #100:

The new plan is to provide an additional standalone page which lists ALL translation messages of the whole Gallery. A single catch-all page to translate strings that are hard to discover (e.g. only displayed in dialogs, only displayed to guests, etc.).

As this is something that is really required for proper translation. Only way out for now that I'm using is copy & paste localization strings to some /views/... file and reveal them to translate. But that's really pita. Can it be done automatic from inside t() function? Any news about that?

Thanks!

@unostar:

OK, it's there now. please get the latest version from git to get the functionality in your gallery3.

in the translation UI, click on "Show All" in the lower left corner, next to "Page Text", and then it will show all the messages that are stored in the DB.

note that the DB only knows about all messages if you did a "get updates" in the language admin before.

@skystis:
the copy button is now finally in.
there have been lots of other improvements since beta 1 as well.
