I'm not sure if it's possible or not in G2 but I think it's useful if providing a feature for local zoom of the images, as the original size of the images are usually larger than the display images, and it's sometimes needed to zoom the image to see some section with a better resolution; and this way is better than loading the whole original image |

I don't see why this couldn't be done with a custom theme. That's how I'd see it being implemented as a "feature" in G2 if ever done anyway.
I don't know _how_ the code would look, but I'm thinking something along the lines of using AJAX to grab the larger image and using some photo zooming javascript and incorporating that into your theme.
Take a look at the Ajaxian theme as it already has a similar feature.
