I have seen examples of albums with different backgrouds (black)and configurations of photos, borders, mattes, etc. How do you edit the look of the albums?

login as admin go into the album you want to change from the admin actions select properties.
In the popup window you will be able to change the colors, Link Color, Rows, columns etc.

you can also change the skin of the the album as well.

Dave,

I can't seem to find any sign of "admin actions" or "properites". I can only log in with my username, which is the Administrator. Can you give me the exact steps from logon forward?

Fisrt you need to install the color pack module:
http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Modules:colorpack
then when you edit a album you will see on the theme tab a option to choose a color pack.
alternatively you can customize a existing colorpack or the default themes css:
I have found 2 tools that are invaluable the firefox browser and the web development tool that allows you to Make live edits to the CSS of a web page..
Once you have them both installed....
select edit css and under the 'information' dropdown check display ID & class details.
Edit your CSS and you will see the results. Once you have this the way you want, upload your edited css to the server.

floridave,

Thank you for this info! Sorry i have been gone so long, my gallery 2 stopped uploading and it has taken months to figure out why(!). Anyway, i still want to work on the site to customize the look. i went to the downloads and found:

Color Packs Select different color palettes for themes 1.0.5 Core 7.10
Module 3.0 65KB 18KB

Would this be the correct download? is there any special instruction on getting this to install properly? (i have never been able to install the 1.5+ upgrade but had someone help me - it had to be installed "on top" of gallery 2 which i still don't understand. i feel like a dummy when it comes to this stuff! so really appreciate your help!).

thanks,
Jonathan

Try the colorpack and see. If it does not work then you have to look for one that does.
Most colorpacks should work with all versions of G2. They are just CSS so you can make you own if you look at the codex for the colorpack module.

Dave,

I can't find how to actually download the module. Clicking it in the download list just goes to an info page. Do you know where to find the downloadable module?

Also, it is listed as Color Packs Select different color palettes for themes 1.0.5. It says it NEEDS "Core 7.10
Module 3.0" Do you know if i have to find these to download first?

(this is awfully complicated. is there an easier way to get this to work?)

thanks,

Jonathan

It says it NEEDS "Core 7.10 Module 3.0"

I guess you need to upgrade gallery.

Dave,

I got it to work with a black background! thanks! I also added some Themes as well (tho i am still learning how these work).

I am in a theme with a different look that i like, but can't find how to move images from one album to a different album. do you know how this can be done once they are uploaded?

thanks,

Jonathan

Well in matrix, on the photo page there is a link in the sidebar "move photo".
Other themes you might have a edit link and then have a move photo link.

If your theme does not have them you will have to temporarily change the theme.
It is up to the theme developer to have the action links.

This makes sense and i will go to Matrix when i can, but I am having a problem getting the themes to change. i change the default and save it but it doesn't change when i go back to my gallery. I first time i did this it changed, but since then it is stuck on that theme (not even sure what it is). Can you tell me what i am missing here?

thanks,

Jonathan

If you change the default it will change the albums that use the default theme. If a album has a setting for another theme it will use that theme.
Edit album, theme tab, change the theme.
Remember the root albums is an albums as well:
