I've been to http://codex.gallery2.org/Gallery2:Upgrading and know I need to take the Replace all files option. I know which files I've made changes to in the default installation and have backed those up. When I upgrade, will I lose the configurations I have made in the Site Admin area and under Edit Album / Edit Permissions for individual albums, or are these settings safe? |

no, you don't lose any of your data. you don't lose your settings either.
what you lose are your modifications to gallery2/... files (.tpl files or whatever you might have edited manually).
anyhow, as always, we highly recommend to create regular backups and a backup before upgrading.

Thanks. I wasn't certain, since the documentation says
Out of curiosity, where are the configuration settings stored? In the database?

bootstrap configuration is in config.php (database connection information, ...).
the rest is stored in the database, mostly in the PluginParameterMap table.

I unpacked the full zip file on top of my existing installation and went to run the upgrader but Firefox says "the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete."
What should I do now?

The problem seems to be because I had renamed main.php to index.php. I've managed now to upgrade and it seems to have run properly.
