I'm really stuck and don't want to have to resort to using flicker or some other program when Gallery is much better!

I'm trying to make a gallery which I can put on my site which I can share my wedding photos in etc.

Could someone help me please?

Any chance that someone could talk me through it on MSN?

Pretty please?

Thanks

Chris

What have you tried so far? What documents have you looked at? What part are you finding difficult?

If you don't want to do *any* of it, there is always the paid support option which will install G2 for you. I think its like $50 or something, been a while since I looked.

I'm not sure what I need to do to be honest.

I'd love to use it Galery 2 on a website which I run for free for a charity. Is it easy to install Gallery? I was trying to make a start installing it an the whole thing just confuses me to be honest. All this business about Unix and Windows examples and a bout security etc.

Not sure what it's all about?

Any chance of someone explaining it on messenger?

Thanks
Chris

please start with http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:How_do_I_Install_Gallery2
and let us know where you run into problems.

there's also irc.freenode.net #gallery-support, which is a chat where you can get real-time support for free...if someone is around.

So with installing Gallery the best script for me to use is the G2 one?

I've started ploughing through How do I install instructions but to me they seem to be in a different language.

I've writtern in HTML and coded sites etc but it's asking things I don't even know about.

Isn't it a simple way to put a photo album on your site?

Thanks

This website here is about the Gallery project.
The Gallery project has 2 Gallery applications. An older one, Gallery 1.x. And a newer one, Gallery 2.x aka G2.
Yes, G2 is what we recommend.

Once installed, G2 features easy ways to get your photo albums onto your website.

The installation of G2 on your website needs about 30 minutes. You need some information about the database of your webhost and that's about all you need to know.
Just ask your webhost what database connection information to use.

Thanks Valiant for your time, patience and help! Really appreciate it.

What information will the answer consist of? Can I continue without the connection information?
It's really hard to get in touch with the hosting company. Can I not work it out some other way?

Thanks

Is there no chance that if I post my msn addy on here you can add me briefly so I can ask a couple of q's to get me up and running?

I'll delete you after I'm running and delete my address from here when you've added me.

Thanks

Thanks,

All the articles seem very well documented and I'm sure that all my answers are found in them but to be honest I don't have a clue what most things mean.

Like:

Apache, IIS, Zeus...

All I want to do is download the app install it and upload pictures. I can't believe it can be that complicated? Maybe it is.

Thanks

please read:
http://codex.gallery2.org/index.php/Gallery2:How_do_I_Install_Gallery2#Webhosting_Users

as it says there, you need a webhosting account if you want to put your photos on your website.

do you have such an webhosting service account? what is your homepage?

I've got the domain name www.quickfish.co.uk and hosting for it.

There's nothing there at the moment becuase I'm putting together a blogspot blog and will point the address to that site.

I wanted to use gallery to display some images in a gallery which I'll create a link to when it's up and running.

Thanks

questions:
1. are you hosting the website on your own server at home?
2. or do you have a webhost account?
3. i see you registered your domain at http://tripoduk.com/. is that your webhost as well?
4. assuming this is your webhost: in the webhosting section of http://tripoduk.com/, they do not list databases in their feature list. are databases included in their hosting plan?

Oh I see! Thanks...

1. are you hosting the website on your own server at home? No it's done by tripoduk
2. or do you have a webhost account? As above
3. i see you registered your domain at http://tripoduk.com/. is that your webhost as well? Yes
4. assuming this is your webhost: in the webhosting section of http://tripoduk.com/, they do not list databases in their feature list. are databases included in their hosting plan?
I can ask them to provde a database feature as they are very flexible. Do I need to have it moved to a linux server or a windows server?

Thanks

@linux:
g2 works on linux and on windows servers. no need to switch.
just a note: most webhosting plans are linux based and g2 is tested much more thoroughly on linux than on any other platform.

@database:
g2 requires a database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2, or MS SQL Server).
probably, you can create on in your cpanel under database (DB).
if you can't find such a thing, please ask your webhost.

So doing these two things is a good start then? I'll see what I can sort.

Thanks again

Finally got an answer from my hosting company after 1 week because the guy's been on holiday! His answer to having a linux server and a database is this:

"For the site to go on a linux server with a database or 160 MB, you would be looking at £300 per year"

As mentioned it's a charity which we run and is not for profit. Infact it only just keeps running after I have personally put in quite a bit of my own cash!

Any suggestions or is this a brick wall?

Thanks
Chris

They are very expensive and their website doesn't look very professional compared to other webhosting companies (read: they don't clearly advertise what features you get etc).

I suggest you switch to a more professional host.
You can get a decent hosting plan for +/- £40 (GBP) a year.

£40 per year! Sounds pretty good.

At the mo the guy does it for free, hence the reason for hosting with him. I think his main business is getting clients the domain names they're after. He negotiates deals over domain names which are in demand.

Is there any way around this?

Thanks

Hi,

You mentioned that you could get a hosting service for +/- £40 (GBP) a As previously mentioned it's a not for profit web site we host and although we need a linux server, pop accounts, cgi scripting, database handling etc etc I wondered what sort of price that would come at?

We also run a couple of charity sites which are very basic static sites and I wondered if there was a company who would host them for a basic cost. A company who wouldn't to provide us with any of the above but jst email forwarding and some space.

Many thanks
Chris

Can anyone help me with this?

I've got to find a new host this week and want to make sure the transition to the new site is seamless.

Thanks

Chris
