Hi. I have the latest version of gallery installed on a webserver with windows 2003 enterprise server+apache2+php5+mysql5.018.

It works great except for the fact that even with only 93 pictures total in it, the response is veeeery slow.!

Is there anything you guys could tell me on how to maybe change the gallery from flatfile to binary ( if that makes it faster) or anything that could speed up the response from the gallery ??
( except installing on linux, i know. that work is being checked too)

You can test the gallery here to see for yourself: http://157.157.79.46/gallery2

Maverick

I'm guessing you're using pretty old hardware. It takes 300ms for your server to return a 302 redirect. 3000ms for the Gallery page to render isn't great, but it's not surprising on really old hardware.

Try turning on acceleration by going to Site Admin -> Performance and using max acceleration. That should help you out considerably.

Ehhh, the hardware is P4

Ehhh, the hardware is P4 3.0ghz, on a sata raid MSI main board with 2gb of wicked fast ram. The web and php and mysql is located on a raid array with mirroring for fast response and safety.

The server is located on a 8mb adsl connection with a router that gives it total priority for internet accessibility.

everything in the machine is less than 3 weeks old and top notch. Also, hyperthreading is also enabled so the box should respond as a dual cpu machine.

Please post followups in the forums, as this really isn't the right place for it. But, I did some benchmarks on your site from here and found that it's taking 400ms just to do a 302 redirect. This is something that takes 1ms on my server (dual 2.4ghz p3 xeons). eg, compare:

ab http://157.157.79.46/e107_plugins/log <-- 463ms
ab http://www.menalto.com/demo <-- 1ms

Granted, I'm halfway around the world from you (judging by traceroute) but even so I'm only 200ms away. Post the results of those ab tests in a forum thread and we can follow up there.

And here is a full info on the server, running windows 2003 server enterprise::

Gallery version = 2.1 core 1.1.0
PHP version = 5.1.2 apache2handler
Webserver = Apache
Database = mysql 5.0.18-nt, lock.system=database
Toolkits = Exif, ImageMagick, SquareThumb, Thumbnail
Acceleration = full/3600, full/3600
Operating system = Windows NT SKSIGLO 5.2 build 3790
Default theme = matrix
Locale = is_IS
Browser = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; SIMBAR Enabled; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)

Please, can anyone help me find out why it is so slow ??? ( besides the OS ) ;)

Regards,

Maverick

damaverick, please post the results of the ab tests I requested above. That should give us a clue as to what's going wrong.

Hi .

I started digging, and deeply into win2003 server problems and found this among other bugs: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/838656/

If gallery communication is dependent on these similar services to communicate with mysql then this might be a part of the problem.
To be honest, I am getting real tired of dealing with windows operating system in a server environment. I mean, would you buy a car with over 4000 manufacturer reported bugs in it ??

Setting up a for example gentoo server takes time but it also stays up

Hi, damaverick. I didn't see the results of the ab tests.. did that turn up anything for you? (I just saw you reposted my message, not your times). My guess is that this is something to do with windows. We've seen spotty performance on that platform in the past. This isn't a great answer, and in a perfect world I'd like to dig into it further to figure out what's going on, but I can't reproduce this behavior on my WinXP box and I don't have Win2003 handy.

Well. We trashed the idea of using the win2003 server, and we built another box using gentoo linux.

There is however one question. Since there was some work and data already saved in the old gallery 2 on the win2003 server and we would like to move that intact over to the new linux box. Is there a simple way to move the whole data and structure into the linux setup gallery2 ??

Is it enough to copy the mysql tables and g2data folder to get the data iin place or is there a trick to it ??? All help on this would be very useful.

PS:

The new machine is located here: http://157.157.117.55/~sksiglo/sksiglo/gallery2/main.php

and I need the data and structure from here: http://157.157.79.46/gallery2/main.php to sit on the first gallery.

PS:PS:

[i]I was watching the CSI tv show two days ago here in iceland, and there was some case where they had a missing kid, and they did a google search on the mothers name and found a home picture gallery of the family and I am pretty sure that the gallery in use was gallery 1 :) So if I am right, then CSI script writers are using your excellent gallery for theyr show and the reason being the easy setup and quick response ;)

Regarding moving your G2, this should tell you what you need to know:
FAQ: How can I move my gallery installation from one server to another?

Your performance should be a lot better on Linux, and if it isn't -- we'll fix it.

@CSI -- ha, that's funny! Do you remember the episode name? I'll have to look that up and get a screen capture :-)

Hey all, I’m having performance issue (my gallery takes 10 seconds to load from 3 seconds) on my site this began when I move to drupal 4.7.3 to manage my site, rather then a normal html page to manage my site...

The link to my site is www.rocale.com... any ideas... Anyone else had similar issues?

if drupal itself is slow:
for drupal related performance questions and issues, please refer to the www.drupal.org forums.

No Gallery2 is just slow, drupal is fine... which is strange, i have looked into and got sql error "Too Many Connections" when accessing my gallery, so i'm getting my webhost to take alook.

Thanks for the advice
