Uploading Photos/Albums

Newbie here. Is there an easy way to upload via ftp a large number of albums from my local hard drive into Gallery 2?

I uploaded a test subdirectory with photos into the /albums directory via ftp, but Gallery 2 does not seem to automatically recognize it as an album. Do I need to upload all my photos one at a time via the Gallery 2 control panel?
