Hi folks.

I have been using Gallery happily for over a year. This is my original installation thread (useful because it contains other info and links): http://gallery.menalto.com/node/22251

Details:
Server is a Linux box
Apache v.1.3.31
PHP 4.3.9
My SQL 4.0.20 standard
Gallery v.1.4.4
Mac iBook G4, 3mb broadband
Opera 8.51, Fetch.

Overnight, I started getting a 500 Internal Server Error. I did not change anything, not even adding another photo. I have checked my space, bandwidth use, and permissions of all files and directories.

It almost looks like I have been barred from running PHP scripts by my hosting provider. Other stuff on my domain still works fine, but gallery is broken. Don't even know where to start trouble-shooting this, especially since my hosting provider is poor at keeping in touch at the best of times.

Problem is here: www.pm-04.com/gallery

****
I HAVE JUST NOTICED that my server has been 'upgraded' to Apache 1.3.34 - could this be the root of the problem??
****

Any tips?
I will try any suggestions and post results / logs here.

Thanks a bunch, guys.

Even the config php scripts won't run!

This is the error log entry:

[Fri Dec 23 07:02:19 2005] [alert] [client 66.249.66.77] /home/pm04/public_html/gallery/.htaccess: Invalid command 'php_value', perhaps mis-spelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration

Does this mean my hoster has done an upgrade and not restarted all the script handlers?

Your host is the problem. After the upgrade, they don't allow PHP configuration settings in .htaccess files anymore. Either get them to fix it, or do the following:

1. Empty the contents of the gallery/.htaccess file, but leave the empty file in place. Chmod it 777
2. Delete the gallery/setup/.htaccess file
3. Re-run the config wizard to have it regenerate the contents in your gallery/.htaccess file.
4. PROFIT!

Hi h0bbel!

Thanks very much for your reply. I have emailed the sysadmin of my hosting company, but they always take ages to get back to me. Will I have to set up my galleries again after re-running the config script, or will they remain?

When I tried to run the config wizard without doing the .htaccess steps you mentioned, I still got the 500 server error. Will the repair work, if I do the steps exactly as you say? I am concerned because my galleries are not backed up (although the actual pictures are).

Thanks a million.

No, you will not need to set it up again, but you need to re-run the config wizard to make it generate the new .htaccess file contents...

Hi - I've got some functionality back by following your advice, thanks a lot. Using the problems identified by the config wizard I have also submitted a detailed suppport request to my hosting provider, so hopefully I can re-config soon and get it back to 100%.

Thanks a lot. I really appreciate the help.

I have the exact problem as the above poster. Except when I tried to correct with the solution provided, I got other errors

I'm running:

Details:
Server is a Linux
Apache v.1.3.31 (not positive)
PHP 4.4.1
My SQL 4.0.22 standard
Gallery v.1.5.1
Mac Power Book G4
Safari v2.0.1, Fetch

---------------------------------------------
Initially I got the same error "Invalid command ----- ". Next I follow the steps you provided by clearing contents on .htaccess (gallery folder) and deleting altogether the .htaccess in the setup file. I then cmode 'd .htaccess to 777 and my setup folder to 755 (to run the config wizard, it wouldn't let me in otherwise). I got the following errors.

when I tried to access the config wizard -

[2005-12-27 05:45:38]: error: directory is writable by others: (/home/adkhighp/public_html/gallery/setup)

When I tried to get right into the setup/index.php -

[2005-12-27 05:00:03]: error: file is writable by others: (/home/adkhighp/public_html/gallery/setup/index.php)

please help, frustrated

By the way, the comments above are from the error logs, however the screen error (and the one I get when I run the setup/diagnostic.php , says -

"Error: Your Userfile is not writeable"

The site is at: http://www.adkhighpeaks.com/gallery/

Thats your hosts setup that seems to limit permissions settings on your files. You'll need to contact them for help en their specific setup.
