i have read some discussions on it but still having problems. currently my host is bending over backwards to install it for me on my server but has had issues trying to install it. my host won't mind me copy/paste what he said here:

"I have tried numerous attempts to install ffmpeg but its proving to be impossible. There are so many dependency problems - to install ffmpeg you need 3 other rpm libraries, these 3 libraries have their own dependencies needs (which requires other rpms to be installed - and these ones require even further rpms) so on and on it goes. Seems there are just too many dependenciy problems with this software. If you can find some installation info (tutorials, discussions, etc) for this software on RHE systems let me know otherwise it looks like we can\'t install this at the moment."

is there someone here familiar with installing this on the server?

also will ffmpeg conmtinue to be developed? http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/
it appears to be threatened by software patents?

is there any other solution that does the same as ffmpeg?

thanks.

tell them to use a unix/linux distribution with a better package management ;)
just kidding. on gentoo, debian, ... the installation is as easy as "apt-get ffmpeg or emerge ffmpeg", because they resolve all dependencies for you.

no, we have no howto or something similar, sorry.
there are alternatives to ffmpeg i guess, but you'd need to copy the ffmpeg g2 module and customize it for this alternative binary.

mindless, has this changed since beta 3 or what's the problem here?

1. when i go to http://www.aussiecommunity.com.au/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core:ShowItem&g2_itemId=836 and click on wren, there's only a download this movie link, no embedded movie.
Does that mean that we could create a thumb from the movie but not detect its dimensions?
2. when i add this wren movie to my G2, i get a thumb and i can view it embedded. (well i can view it in IE, but not in firefox, but i guess that's because i installed firefox after quicktime and now it thinks there's no quicktime)

is there anything server side i need to do? i was looking at this site that uses it http://www.vimeo.com/

but even when pressing play it seems to start downloading but at the same time gives the ability to play whilst downloading. is this how it works?

can it be used for live streaming from the server without downloading it?

Razgo, did you add the movie after activating ffmpeg? Because if you add it before activating ffmpeg then ffmpeg won't generate the thumbnail for you...

yes after i activated ffmpeg. here is one i just i just uploaded recenlty and it didn't even give me a download link http://www.aussiecommunity.com.au/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core:ShowItem&g2_itemId=904

ther is no issue with a thumbnail being generated. there is no play/streaming option. thats whats missing. isnt that whats supposed to happen? and sometimes it doesnt record the movie size.

Razgo, could you upgrade to the current nightly snapshot, make sure the ffmpeg module is active and then add one of the movies again?

no, just extract the new archive over the old. i don't think you have cvs access on this shared hosting (unless you have ssh access, but obviously you don't have it).

current.gallery2.tar.gz from http://gallerypdates.jpmullan.com

upload and extract it over your existing gallery2 folder. this can be achieved with cpanel file browsers which can extract archives.
if that's not available, you have to use ftp to upload the extracted files, i.e. upload thousands of files via ftp.

ok i uploaded everything and the result http://www.aussiecommunity.com.au/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core:ShowItem&g2_itemId=836
is just the same. i don't get a download link or a play button.

if you need to take a look via SSH let me know.

i must be doing something wrong? whenever i extract the file using cpanel it extracts all contents to individual folders outside of where it was supposed to go in my "gallery2" folder

ok i did a cp to get the exact video file thats on the server to another directory as well where i installed cpg.
http://home.djandyj.com/cpg/displayimage.php?album=16&pos=0 is the CPG link
http://home.djandyj.com/gallery/main.php?g2_itemId=65 is the same file through G2

Rioght now I'm streaming it through CPG perfectly fine on my 770 (n ot through the browser mind you, spot where the embedded player would be has a graphic, i click it and it prompts me to download or open and i click open and it streams). When I try the same approach through G2, i click the graphic and I can't select open. Not sure what the difference is, somehow they are presenting it differently to my browser or my browser is interpreting them differently, i don't know.

I'm moving towards using joomla on my main site, and it appeared that G2 bridge was better supported than the cpg bridge, thats one of the reasons I was hoping to move to G2.
