Hi, I am new here and I like the idea of gallery. My compliments to you for your good work. I have a question. I downloaded gallery 1.5. I would like to use gallery as a photoblog for photoblogging. Visitors are also able to comment one photo. And this should work so: 1) Every day, there will be uploaded 1 photo in the full-size by FTP. Gallery-software should make the rest for me. 2) And everytime, if you upload 1 photo, the startpage shows you the latest photo, which is then in a little bigger size. If you click on this photo, you will then get the full size. 3) The startpage of Gallery has not only the latest photo in the center, there are also 5 icons on the left side. These 5 icons are the older photos in icon-format. If you click on one of these 5 icons, there will appear a new website with the full-size. But this is not all. The startpage will show you on the left side 5 icons and then there is also a link [more] or letz call it [archive]. If you click on [archive]-link, you come into the archive of months and years and so on. Maybe I am too creative with my ideas, I don't know. Can you please help me and let me know, what exactly I must do to realize this idea? As far as I understand the Gallery-Software, this idea of photoblogging can be easily realized by just changing the template. Hmm? Thank you very much I want to show you a typical example of photo-blogging which can be realized with the Gallery-software and the right one template (no idea where I can download this template at gallery.menalto.com) http://rrb-rose.fotoblog.uol.com.br/ - You see there in the center the middle size. If you click on the middle-size, you will get the full-size. Muito obrigado! |

To me, none of those links look like gallery at all. They look like some other (similar to eachother) software that is made for photo blogging. I would go after them, since it appears to do exactly what you want.
Gallery is photo album software, there really are no concessions for photo blogging, though It would be possible to do it if you wished.
I use WordPress as my "blog" (though I don't consider it a blog) and I simply upload images to my gallery and use WP to link to them in my post. Works fine for me. There are some scripts around that will list the latest additions / changes, so what you want to do DOES exist... it would just not be easy to modify and get working exactly how you want.
Good luck
You might have an eaiser time with doing this to G2 because it has maximum flexibility in mind from the begining. G1 is kind of stuck in some basic ways that I think would make it harder to do this with.

I don't understand you. With this example of http://pepemelega.fotoblog.uol.com.br/ you see a typical thing what also Gallery-Software can do. The startpage shows you in the middle the middle-size. And on the left side, you see the latest 5 photos. If you want to see more photos, then there is a link below these 5 icons which will bring you to an archive.
Can anybody help me to realize this simple Gallery-Idea? Thank you very much.

There are no pre-existing templates for download that are set up in the way you described. Perhaps you are thinking of a different kind of photo software?
As Fryfrog said, these examples all look similar to each other but they are not examples of the Gallery software available for download on this site. Perhaps you should email one of the examples and ask them about the software they use?
You would have to do a ridiculous amount of customizing to get to this point with G1.5 - more than any of the volunteers that answer questions here would do for free - and I get the feeling you can't do it on your own. The next logical step would be paying for customization, but since there seems to be another application out there that already accomplishes this task, why are you so set on using something that doesn't do what you want without a lot of changes (and probably a lot of headaches).
I don't quite understand.

Hi Gaile.
Yes, I love Gallery-software.

Yes, I am blonde.
Yes, I am strong and a little stubborn with my wish and I want to try it instead of giving up without giving it a chance. I am gallerynator. ;-)
I have tested so many photo-softwares. The result was very clear: Gallery-Software is a clear winner for me. It is the best. I cannot live without Gallery-Software anymore. ;-) And making donates to Gallery? Sure, no problemo. This is a very normal thing because you all did a great job.
The only one thing what I do not like so very much is that I am locked with making my own templates. Just to realize my wish what I want to do with photoblogging. Namely: Login by FTP, select some new photos in full-size, and upload this by FTP. Thats all. The Gallery-Software makes the rest for me (icons, website, etc.).
And I think, that I am not able just to realize this easy technical thing. I do not afford much. Only the last 5 posted photos in icon-format on the left side and below it a link to the monthly archive. And the startpage should only show the latest uploaded photo in middle-size. You can click on the icon = photo in fullsize. You can click on the startpage-photo in middle-size = photo in fullsize. Thats all.
What do you think, how much would this costs for me to realize this? 1 USD? 100000 USD? Or do you prefer more the way of making donates? Let me know it. Thank you very much.

I'll do it for the latter! :P :D Send the monies to my off shore account in HongKong and I will begin. :wink:
There is similar mods that you can find for fee in this forum. start with stats.php. I will be modding it later this week/weekend to do something similar

Hi floridave,
It is weekend now. I will try now to upload and install the Gallery-Software onto my development-server.
I think, it will take me many hours to work myself into this software, because it is a total new software for me. There are many files. This is my big "bug". And what is needed is only a simple template for photo-blogging.
I like this example of Pepe with his http://pepemelega.fotoblog.uol.com.br/ but in the meanwhile, I could detect another example which is also very great, see the gallery of Rita at http://rita.santos.fotoblog.uol.com.br/
Wonderful. She posts photos by FTP and every other thing is done by a gallery-software itself. But Pepe and Rita do not use "Gallery-Software Version 1.5", they have another tool. And the funny thing is: They all do not know this tool, because the provider has installed a very similar gallery-software with a special template.
I think, this Gallery-Software V 1.5 is much more better than this one tool of the brazilian provider. The Gallery-Software V 1.5 needs only a simple template, I think so.
Can you give me a tip, where exactly or with what exactly I can start to make such a template? of course, teamworking would not be a problem for me. Maybe we can then later offer other gallery-users this new template for downloading. For free, of course.
I think, I will wait for your suggestion and ideas.
BTW: If anyone else is here who also want to make a template for "photo-blogging with Gallery 1.5", then just give us a wink here. You re welcome.

gallerynator, did you read what Gaile said?
This is not a simple template. Try to install Gallery first and once you are farmilir with the /html_wrap files and how to customize them post back with your site and tell use what you would like to do.
Saying you want your site to look like another site will NOT get you a answer. If you want your site to look like those sites do as Gaile siad "ask them about the software they use?" or why not join http://fotoblog.uol.com.br/ and see if that fits what you want to do.
looking forward to seeing your install.

ok. No, I will not join fotoblog.uol.com.br there. We are here to make the template "photoblogging" for all Gallery-Users. Or so. I'll let you know the URL soon. Just checking something with the SAFE MODE here.

uhhh... what a big bug in gallery 1.5. There is a lot to do and to fix.
$gallery->app->albumDir = "/home/httpd/hoster.tld/subdomains/gallerynator/httpdocs/albums";
Error: // Missing value: Temporary directory!
Let me look.
'tmpDir' => array(
'prompt' => _("Temporary directory"),
'desc' => '(<span class="attention">' . _('REQUIRED') . '</span>) ' .
sprintf(_("The filesystem path to a temporary directory. E.g. %s or %s. Note that if you have <b>open_basedir</b> configured on your system, then this temporary directory must be inside the <b>open_basedir</b> path! In that case you may need to create the directory yourself and make sure that it's writable by the webserver process."),
'<i>/tmp</i>','<i>c:\\windows\\temp</i>'),
'value' => getenv("TMP"),
'filename' => 1,
'require-write-dir' => 1,
'type' => "text",
'attrs' => array('size' => 50),
'required' => true,
I ll kick this, write later the complete(!) path (not only this dirname(dirname(__FILE__)) . '/includes/stats/stats.inc.php, it must be
"/home/httpd/hoster.tld/subdomains/gallerynator/httpdocs/includes/stats/stats.inc.php" whereas for the setup-processure you have to create a standard-variable $path for using a '$path/includes/stats/stats.inc.php' to it.
for the temp use $path/tmp whereas this already exist in the gallery-1.5.tar.gz. The user need only to chmod this to 755.
I manually have to write in the path of tmp, of course. Then it should work. But the config.php still has only 0 Bytes....

Do you think, that you can please rent me your config.php? I would change some things there to my server, upload it then... Thank you very much.
7,5 hours now on this Gallery-Software. I hate this.

If you specify the alpha-pgmfile, pnmcomp uses it as an alpha mask, which means it determines the level of transparency of each point in the overlay image. The alpha mask must have the same dimensions as the overlay image. For the case of photo-blogging, you do not need watermarks. What we need here is the module for resizing the original photo and the php to connect and work with this module.

The next "problem" is, that if you run (the quickest) Linux, you should save only 256 pics within 1 folder. If a user has 2.000 or more photos, then the speed of the server will crash down.
Did you already try to measure the Load Averages? Gallery-Version 1.5 produces 0.91 0.81 0.92 here.
And the memory usage is full-powered with 100% although there the RAM has 1024 MB.
I would suggest, to post uploaded photos directly into SQL-database as binaries. If a visitor will call an internet-adress of an album, then the binaries are served by the SQL. I guess, the speed will then be under 0,30, maybe under 0,20.
But I must say - without any doubts - Gallery-Version 1.5 was much work. You invest a lot of energy into it, wow, my compliment. Is Gallery-Software Version 2.x with SQL? Hmm.. let me look there. I don't think, it would be a good idea by me to suggest (and programm) a version 1.6 while you already work on 2.x. 8-)
Naja, we will see... downloading 2.x now.
