Has there been any work on profiling performance in G2? For example, using a tool such as the Zend Studio Profiler to identify any bottlenecks in the PHP code. If it would be any help (or if it has not been done yet), I can help by providing some profiling data for G2 with the Zend Studio I have installed.

I ask because my gallery installation (on a dreamhost server) seem a little sluggish, and I'm hoping I can provide some help into increasing the performance of G2 :)

Gallery has a built-in profiler, you can activate it in config.php.
We are aware of the performance problems and the main problem is the DownloadItem view, because each image in G2, each thumbnail etc. runs through the whole application because of the image firewall.
A major improvement is on the way.
If you find other bottlenecks with the zend studio than the ones you can identify with the built-in G2 profiler, let us know :)

Your problem is Dreamhost. I was hosted on DH until just recently (5 days ago), and they are overselling horrendusly. Server loads (on my server at least) were generaly around 2.5 or 3. Just moved to InsiderHosting (who I had been hosted with before, but moved to DH because they were cheaper), and server loads are consistantly around .1 and .2.

Just remember, with a host, you get what you pay for. DH offers a lot for cheap, and you pay for it with speed.
