There is currently a dropdown menu which manages the actions available for each album and photo. I think a set of micro icons would make the options more visually accessible, and prompt viewers to post comments more readily.

This could be a configurable option, perhaps, to enable/disable micro icons vs. drop down menu. (Because the menu is pretty sharp looking)

I have a few micro icons which I can contribute... but maybe if there is a skillful designer somewhere out there that can make a uniformly styled set of icons that look good on any theme - it would be better.

(i attached a few... i guess it's pointless if someone's already on this for me to litter the forum with more)

Ross and I would like to have micro icons. I'm thinking that we'd have default ones, but the theme could override them with more interesting ones. One problem is that for a localized application you can't use text in your micro icons unless we come up with a way to make the icon vary with the user's locale preference...

Absolutely, I neglected to take into account different locales. Is there a designer on board that could possibly add this to their to do list? I'm not skilled enough to make an original submission of my own, but I wanted to get the idea on the table...

I asked Ross to take a look at this thread and respond.

Hey guys,

thanks for giving this some attention. I found a resource which has a cool collection of nifty micro icons.

Thanks for the link! That page is a great resource to get our creative juices flowing and start thinking about using micro icons instead of pull-down menus.

I see the Matrix theme/layout as a core "vanilla" view of Gallery2. Once we have honed and refined the functionality of all the UI elements, we can start thinking about replacing some of the UI elements (pull-downs, list menus, navigation, etc.) with flashier, more exciting elements. (I look forward to taking the Matrix theme/layout and re-doing it—Matrix:Reloaded perhaps? :P)

Hopefully we can also start assembling more people to help out with UI tweaking to make this go by faster...

Thanks for the feedback! I love the ideas of micro icons instead of pull downs...

Another source of free icons is the GNOME Project :
(availaible at http://jimmac.musichall.cz/ikony.php3 but on lots of other locations)

I hope it can help...

hi, just wanted to draw attention to the micro icon idea once again. I like the "updated" icon, totally awesome. Haven't messed with it much though, was wondering if the locale specific issues arise with it?

The drop down menus are the source of most confusion with my visitors, breaking it out into clickable links with optional micro icons would probably make things a lot more intuitive.

thoughts anyone?

rossr, one thing about the matrix theme I noticed is that it is too much white with just simply bold printed headers. I think it could use some color in headers, or enclose sections more clearly. Do you think this is something you will change?

In regards to micro-icons–The idea definately has interest but we're short handed in the UI area currently.

There are currently no plans to add color to Matrix. The primary concerns for Matrix are better interoperability of layouts/themes, improving portions of the administration interface (user/group management), micro-icons, dealing with various overlap issues, and creating hacks to correct IE CSS rendering issues.

If you're able to contribute in any of these areas, give it a shot on your G2 install and share your work here in the forums.

Thanks!
