NET PBM install?

How do I install NETPBM???

I downloaded the Linux version but there's only one file in the zip. I put it in a folder and pointed gallery to it, but it says it can't find it.

And I can't find anywhere that tells how to install NetPBM. I see, compile it or whatever, but it's like nobody really knows what to do?

Please help,

art4x, it's really pretty easy. Download, extract, upload and poitn Gallery to the placement of the files.

Check FAQ Gallery:c.25 if you only get one file when when extracting.

I'm also stuck at the netpbm install. I downloaded the version for freebsd, and uploaded to my server. the file is named:

netpbm1.1-gallery1.0-freebsd4.2-intel

it does not appear to have any file extension. I don't know how to uncompress it. I've tried gunzip and tar xvf - I get a file not found error. I've tried it as if the file had a .gz or .tar extension. I'm not very familiar with all this unix stuff....

Any ideas or assistance. Is there a .zip I could decompress on my windows machine and then upload all the files separately?

Thanks for any help. - DPAM

Reading a FAQ that another post pointed me to, I was able to unzip on windows and upload. I changed the CHMOD to 755 on all files. COnfigure still can't find the files. "Could not find /usr/local/www/vhosts/domain.com/htdocs/gallery/netpbm/pnmtojpeg"

I see these 'notes' in the manual:

"Make sure Apache is not running in a chroot environment. This is the default for OpenBSD. Modify /etc/rc.conf and add '-u' to the httpd options list. If you do not do this, Gallery will not be able to find the executables it nees to run (NetPBM, jhead, jtran, etc.).

You can still run Apache in a chroot environment for OpenBSD, you just have to move the files into the jail."

What the heck does that mean? Is this related to my freebsd problem?

The extractin of the file is covered in FAQ Gallery:c.25

Get the files extracted, upload them and post the debug info you get after that.

I got them decompress and uploaded. Get "Could not find /usr/local/www/vhosts/domain.com/htdocs/gallery/netpbm/pnmtojpeg" when I run the config. But the files are there and CHMOD 755.

What distribution of Linux are you using? Do you have shell access?

Using freebsd, yes I have shell/root access, but don't know much so I can only follow literal instructions. Thanks.

dpam, go back to page 2 of the config, and specify pnmtojpeg in the dropdown, the netpbm distro you have probably has that and not pnmtojpeg (they are the same binaries, but renamed by netpbm).

OK, got past that. THANKS!

Now I'm failing at the Temp directory. It asks for the 'filesystem path' (as opposed to the full path of the line above, and URL in the line below, so much for consistency) and I"m entering /GalleryTemp. I created this directory in the root right next to /gallery. I also created one inside the gallery directory and tried /gallery/gallerytemp but that failed too.

What am I doing wrong here? Thanks so much for your help.

dpam, try /tmp as it should be writeable by the webserver user.

here's the error I get..

Error: Can't find pnmcomp!

but.. I did not find the file pnmcomp listed anywhere.. i've redownloaded and re-extracted from a different mirror.. same set of files listed in the tar.gz
I've got 14 items, but none by that name. Anyone got a recommendation on this?

dpam, no problem. We hope to get the full new netpbm packages ready when RC2 is released.

So how are people getting RC-1 to work then? I copied one of the binaries and renamed it pnmcomp but still get the one error saying it needs NetPBM 9.9 to load? Is there anyother help out there?

jeepinaround, that should work.... If not, i guess you'll have to get the NetPBM binaries from somewhere else, or get your host to install the full netpbm package.

RC2 is due out Real Soon Now (tm) so you could wait ...
