Gallery 2 Beta 1 (Dark Fibre) released!
Submitted by bharat on Fri, 2005-03-04 19:17
This is the first installment in the Gallery 2 beta cycle. In the past 4 months we've made considerable improvements to the product. This release is a big milestone for many reasons, not the least of which is that we are now providing a well tested upgrade path from here until the final Gallery release. If you're using Gallery 2 Alpha 4 or more recent, you can upgrade without losing any of your data.
As before, this is a technology release so that we're providing you can get an idea of how the product is maturing. It is stable and reliable, but does not yet have all the features that you will find in Gallery 1.x. Download the latest code and play with it! Before you ask for help, please, please read the README -- we've made an effort to answer all of your questions there. Especially read the known issues section. If you're upgrading, be sure to read the instructions. Then head on over to the G2 Forums and let us know what you think!
The more feedback you give us now, the better the final version of G2 will be. Thanks for your continued support!

I'm currently running Gallery v1.4.4-pl6 and I'd like to migrate to Gallery 2, but I'm not sure about the timing.

This first beta-release could be right moment, --- but I'd like to know, what other users think about "the right time to migrate"...

So, what do YOU think?

Thomas Stegh

Hi Thomas,

I have been running G2 on a test site for a couple of months and I must say that the product runs very stable and from now, also a upgrade path will be provided. I would highly recommend you to test-drive G2, as this will let you become familiar with the product and see whether everything works (for you). If you are familiar with the product, a final upgrade will also be more easy.

However, it is still beta and not yet finished. As I am just running G1 on a personal site with a couple of visitors a week (of which I am might be half of the visitors ;-) ), I think I will will go for the upgrade.
Hi Arjen,

I just installed G2 "Dark Fibre" - and almost everything is fine, the only problem I encountered was a "CGI Timeout", but this is certainly not a G2 problem, but something with PHP and IIS.

(Yes, I'm running G2 on a windows machine... ;)

The error I got when I used the import/migration tool was the following:

Creating thumbnails
Thumbnail 49 of 235

HTTP/1.1 502 Gateway Error Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0 Date: Sun, 06 Mar 2005 01:29:43 GMT Content-Length: 186 Content-Type: text/html
CGI Timeout
The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process.

Now I have to find out where to set the "allowed time for processing". Any ideas, anyone? ... Well, I'm going to ask google in the meantime...

G2 seems to be a pretty cool piece of code!

Since I'm also running a personal site with not so many visitors, I guess I can "risk" to start using G2 for this.

Regards,
Thomas
I think I found a hint to the solution of this problem, it is in fact an IIS setting I have to adjust:

I found the possible solution here: http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=25252

-----8<---------------------------------

This is actually caused by a setting in IIS and whichever version you are using. to correct follow these steps:In the Start Menu, go the Settings menu, and choose Control Panel.

Open the Administrative Tools control panel.

Open the Internet Services Manager item.

Right-click on the computer icon in the left panel and choose Properties from the menu that appears.

Click "Edit..." next to "WWW Services".

Click the "Home Directory" tab.

Click the "Configuration..." button.

Click the "Process Options" tab.

Enter a large value in the CGI script timeout field, perhaps 999999.

-----8<---------------------------------

In my (German) version of the IIS configuration I can only find the setting for "ASP-Skripttimeout" at this location.

I entered 3600, because the unit is seconds, and 1 hour of processing time should be enough, --- at least I hoped so...

But I got the error again (not after 1 hour, but after a few minutes) and so I entered "999999" now, thinking "maybe that'll do the trick..."

Unfortunately I still get this error after some time:

Creating thumbnails
Thumbnail 62 of 235

HTTP/1.1 502 Gateway Error Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0 Date: Sun, 06 Mar 2005 01:59:31 GMT Content-Length: 186 Content-Type: text/html
CGI Timeout
The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process.

No I entered "2147483647", but i still get this error.

Probably the setting "ASP-Skripttimeout" is not the same as "CGI Timeout", but I just can't find a setting for "CGI Timeout" anywhere in the IIS configuration...

Maybe I have to find out how to run PHP not as CGI but as the ISAPI module...

Thomas

I tried to run PHP as ISAPI, but that resulted in IIS refusing to work, I actually had to restart the server, since I couldn't start/stop the "wwww publishing service" anymore...

Now I still have to live with the "CGI Timeout" problem: When an operation takes more than 5 minutes (300 seconds) I always get this:

CGI Timeout
The specified CGI application exceeded the allowed time for processing. The server has deleted the process.

PHP itself also has a timeout/max execution time for scripts. Look in your php.ini file in your winnt directory (back it up before doing any changes). The value is called max_execution_time
You'll have to restart iis after modifying your php.ini file for the changes to take.

You should run PHP as fastcgi on IIS5, it's a lot faster and more stable than cgi or isapi.
I found this installer PHP EasyWindows Installer very easy to use:
http://phplens.com/phpeverywhere/node/view/12

hope that helps.
Well, finally I found the right setting...

The solution is simple, but you have to find it... (it's here: http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B209391&x=10&y=11

For IIS 4.0
1. Click Start and point to Programs.
2. Point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
3. Point to Microsoft Internet Information Server.
4. Click Internet Service Manager.
5. Right-click the server name (not the virtual server, but the name of the computer).
6. Click Properties.
7. Click the Edit button.
8. Click the Home Directory tab.
9. Click the Configuration button.
10. On the Process Options tab, choose the section for CGI Configurations.
11. Type in the new timeout value in seconds (use a value between 10 - 2,147,883,648).
12. Click OK three times.

It's the same as my first possible solution, but I didn't find the setting for cgi and got it wrong with the asp-settings...

Well now everything *should* work...

REAL GREAT WORK!

I have imported my G1 with over 4000 images to G2. My compliments for the easy setup of G2, the easy handling, the easy import routine. Nearly everything went flawless (except: I had one corrupt album - the import stopped on that. No problem, new import omitting the corrupt album).

By the way: It was a cross system upgrade: Old Gallery on linux, new gallery on mac.

The only thing I am missing is the fullscreen slideshow.
Thanks a lot!
it was mentioned that alpha versions might break compatibility and upgrading might be unavailable - will future versions offer upgrade ?

i would like to add my images into gallery with keywords etc, but i want to do that only once ;)
Per the announcement: "This release is a big milestone for many reasons, not the least of which is that we are now providing a well tested upgrade path from here until the final Gallery release. If you're using Gallery 2 Alpha 4 or more recent, you can upgrade without losing any of your data." So from now on you can upgrade without loosing or having to reenter data.
"If you're using Gallery 2 Alpha 4 or more recent, you can upgrade without losing any of your data."

Well, that's why I decided to start using G2. Until now it works really good, I didn't encounter any problems at all; this is the beste piece of software beta-release I ever installed.

The only minor "problem" I found was with the panorama viewer: The viewer window is slighty to large, it goes right over the right "border".
But that's not really a problem.

One other issue I couldn't find a solution for ist the "Gallery Remote" tool. I've used v1.4.1 for some time with Gallery v1.4.4 and everythings works fine there.

With G2 I only get an error message, some other people reported thsi as well in the G2 discussion forums. I even tried to install the latest snapshot of the last beta release of "Gallery Remote", 1.4.2-b12, but that didn't bring any improvement.

Anyway: Dark Fibre is great work!

Thomas
ups, my Gallery Remote works flawlessly.

Another thing: the hidden Items did not remain hidden after the Import.
Wow! Gallery 2 is amazing! Imported all of my Gallery v1 albums without a hitch.
Imported 1629 pictures in 55 albums from the 1.5RC-1 version.

I need to exercise it and see what is what - but the install and import went without a hitch.

Great work, again, folks.
You can use phpMyAdmin which is included on a lot of hosting control panels to dump or export your database data into a 'yourfilename.sql' file, which can be imported into a new db linked with a newer Gallery install. Also useful if you're about to move hosts, like me

Got Gallery 2 up on running on my OS X box (client 10.3.8) smoothly. Imported Gallery V1 Albums without a hitch - so far.

My impressions is its a very slick/professional looking package. It does use more resourses than v1 as it runs a fair bit slower on my old server (400MHz G3). However, I accept the slow down for the interface improvements (i.e shopping cart and zip downloads) and the added security. With G2 I can store my originals way out side my Pub HTML directory. With the old version I could hack the originals simply by getting the URL for the thumbnail then erasing the "thumb" part. This hack is no longer a possibility as long as you put the albumn outside the root web directory and preferably the web directory itself. Another benifit of G2 is you can rename and move the Gallery installation folder without reconfiguring gallery to keep it running.

Only hitch was getting the MySQL database up and running. I am a newbie to Unix so this took me an hour or so of reading and trial and error.
