Hi,
I have been using Gallery2 for quite awhile. It's a great software package and I'm thankful that it's available to use.

But, there seems to be little activity or development of either Gallery2 or Gallery3.

What is the future of these 2 great projects?

thanks!

Is there something specific you are missing from your long running G2 installation ... or you just think you must be missing something?

Neither. I am wondering if these projects are being maintained and updated since there's almost no activity in that regard.

What does the future hold?

No one knows what the future holds.

As far as G2 goes, all official work on it was stopped about four or five years ago to focus on G3.

However, work on G3 appears to have stalled and G2 is to some of us, a far better product anyway and which, with v2.3.2, fairly future proof in terms of PHP compatibility as it will work with PHP 5.5 and most likely with PHP 5.6.

Most webhosts are on PHP 5.3 or 5.4 for the forward leaning ones.

Bear in mind that the G2.3.1 release, which added PHP 5.3+ compatibility, was an "unofficial" effort as the devs were already on G3 at the time.

If a version of PHP that breaks G2 is released, you can be reasonably sure that G2 fans will step up to fix it again well before most webhosts even deploy such a version of PHP.

As for G3, I assume the devs will get back to it at some point. I personally prefer G2 and sticking with this.

I'll even go as far as saying that I believe the whole idea of G3 was a big mistake & distraction which has been detrimental to the overall Gallery project.

I think that even if only a fraction of the effort that has gone into G3 had been spent on moving G2 forward instead, the project would be in a far better position.

This is just a personal opinion of a G2 fan & I am sure some others have a different view :)

I still use G2 for all my new gallery projects.

Dayo,
Thanks for the reply. This is very helpful to know since I would very much like to continue using G2 for the forseeable future since I have over 30,000 photos in my installation. It's great that G2 is alive and kicking that some of the fans are helping to maintain it too.

Maybe the developers would return to updating G2 as well as G3 since what you describe seems to be a common thought, or at least keeping the community posted as to a roadmap, etc. I know that's a lot to ask for an open source project. The lack of information and recent postings and updates on the Galleryproject.org site are disconcerting.

As for wanted features:
•G2 could use a functioning recaptcha module for comments (although I may try and modify the theme template to add this).
•It's not clear that WPG3 (or 2) functions any longer (Gallery to Wordpress integration). It would be great if it did.
Gallery2 has much better organization and presentation than NextGen, the most popular wordpress photo plugin.
http://wordpress.org/plugins/wpg3/ and
•Some sort of popup plugin, although this could be done in the theme as well with javascript.

My site is here: http://gallery.cyclingutah.com

Thanks!!

There has been clear information given. G2 is no longer being developed and support is peer to peer on the forum. Devs are focusing on G3.

I believe there are existing recaptcha and WP integration modules. You may need to search.

WPG2
Still working for me http://wp.suprsidr.com/

When I find a need for specific G2 functionality I usually develop it myself.

There is only a recaptcha in beta that looks like it's broken.
There is no functioning WP integration plugin for wordpress. WPG3 is apparently non-functional, and has had not changes in over 2 years. WPG2 is gone.

And, there seems to be little to no development activity, posts, notifications, etc for either G2 or G3, which was my original query.

On recaptcha: Did you actually install and find it to be broken?

On WP: Did you miss the post from Supr just before yours?

If you are going to use FOSS, you need to be a bit more self starting. Use google etc.
