Reducing image file sizes in the Gallery

I have 10,000 images in my Gallery 3.
I would like to reduce the file size of a significant number of them. I can download them all - resize them and then re-upload, rename and delete the old version. Would take months and months.

But if I downloaded all the images via FTP. Then resized them. Could I then re-upload them via FTP (with no name changes) and overwrite the originals? Or would it crash as the original date uploaded held somewhere in the Gallery would be different to the current date uploaded?

( I would be downloading and then re uploading to <Gallery><Var><Albums> )

There is DB entries as well for the original size that you might have issues with replacing the original.
I think there is a module for this, have you looked?
