Cannot get to the G3 installation start page

When trying to install Gallery3 (Ubuntu, Apache) and navigating to
http://myIPaddress/gallery3/ or
http://myIPaddress/gallery3/index.php (permissions for this file for the sake of testing are 777, owner root, group root)
to get to the installation start page
I get "500 internal server error" and nothing shows
whereas navigating to http://myIPaddress/gallery3/phpinfo.php (testing page for php) the testing page displays all right.

To get around the possible permission issue with the index.php file I even copied the contents of the index.php file to the phpinfo.php file in which I previously deleted everything. Still the same error 500!!!

What could be the problem?

Other than that, could be a lot of different things.
I'd try reuploading ALL of the files (maybe even redownload, unzip, and reupload); something could be missing or corrupted. What's in the error logs?
