I am wondering if I can upload files directly into the gallery (into the var/albums folder) and then have Gallery rebuild the album it pick up the newly added items?

I second this request, and I have missed it for years in all Gallery versions. The ability to *easily* upload a huge amount (60K pictures in my case), and have them imported into Gallery3 is a show stopper. Using any of the included methods is too slow, too problematic, and just not good enough. Uploading them to /var/albums (through ftp, SMB, scp, or whatever) and have Gallery 3 automatically detect them - and import them would be great.

A new user just starting with Gallery3 would not request this, but those of us who have used other Webb Based Galleries and want to transition to Gallery3's features would definitely need this.

Thanks,
~Mike

BTW, ZenPhoto has this feature, but they lack all the nifty user management features that Gallery 3 has. But I'm still sticking with IDS - a simple, Perl based 'Image Display System', last release from 2002.... http://ids.sourceforge.net/

Gotta agree, if any of those other mechanisms worked I would be able to deploy... Still looking for a good solution. Might try ZenPhoto
